Engineering Manager, DBA

We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead our Database Administration team. In this role, you will be responsible for managing a team of DBAs across multiple locations, ensuring the security, scalability, and performance of our database infrastructure. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to deliver high-availability database solutions that are critical to our business operations. As a leader, you will drive the strategic direction of the DBA team while overseeing its day-to-day operations, ensuring high performance and operational excellence.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a geographically distributed Database Administration team, providing guidance, mentorship, and performance management.
  • Collaborate with development, security, and operations teams to align database strategies with broader organisational goals.
  • Ensure the security, scalability, and high availability of PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, and MySQL databases across the company.
  • Drive database architecture decisions, implementing best practices for database performance, backup, disaster recovery, and fault tolerance.
  • Manage and resolve complex database-related incidents, providing guidance to the DBA team in minimising downtime and improving recovery times.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, leading the DBA team in identifying and implementing process improvements and automation initiatives.
  • Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for database systems, ensuring the team delivers high-performance and reliable services.
  • Work closely with other engineering managers and leaders to ensure smooth cross-team collaboration and successful project delivery.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in database administration, with at least 2 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Experience leading geographically distributed teams, ensuring effective communication and collaboration across time zones.
  • Deep expertise in relational databases such as PostgreSQL as well as other popular non- relational databases (MongoDB, Redis, ClickHouse, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of database architecture, replication, sharding, clustering, and high- availability configurations.
  • Proven ability to lead a team in performance tuning, optimisation, and troubleshooting complex database issues.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across departments.
  • Russian speaking is required for effective communication within the team and across the company.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with operating database solutions in the cloud, particularly in AWS, as well as on-premise data centres.
  • Extensive experience with distributed systems, including designing and managing distributed databases with replication, sharding, and high-availability configurations.
  • Experience in designing and implementing disaster recovery, backup strategies, and failover mechanisms.
  • Solid understanding of containerisation and orchestration technologies, such as Kubernetes for database management.
