We're looking for Land Rights Project Managers to lead a team to deliver high-quality land rights services to maximise National Grid's chances of successfully consenting and delivering new infrastructure projects nationwide.
You'll be part of a diverse team providing an expert land rights and acquisition service for new electrical assets for National Grid. Such projects will be promoted as voluntary acquisitions, Compulsory Purchase Orders or Development Consent Orders. This will be in accordance with current legislation and best practice, to ensure National Grid adheres to its licence obligations and secures land rights for its new and existing assets.
In this role you can enjoy our hybrid working from office and home. You'll be flexible to travelling to offices and project sites as required. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.
Key accountabilities
- Line manage and provide strategic and development support to a diverse team of land professionals to drive forward the delivery of projects across a portfolio of projects from development to construction, including access to land, securing land and land rights, and the negotiation of compensation settlements.
- Set the strategy for delivery of all land activities and be accountable for programme, key milestone delivery, risk, safety, forecasts, contract and financial management, including any mitigation to keep the project on track.
- Undertake future-work planning and ensure project resource requirements are identified, recruited and sufficiently trained ahead of need whilst minimising the risk of being over-resourced.
- Drive efficiency and value by assisting specialists in the development and consistent implementation of policies, processes and frameworks for lands in response to changes in legislation, associated Government guidance and emerging industry practice.
- Ensure work is delivered in accordance with National Grid's policies, processes and frameworks for the acquisition of land and land rights in a transparent, credible, consistent and economic way.
- Collate, input and analyse key data to monitor performance of project deliverables to time and within budget, liaising with the Land Performance and Operations team.
- Manage (often competing) internal/external stakeholder, landowner and customer requirements.
- Build a collaborative relationship with our Supply Chain, work with the internal Land Rights & Referencing framework team. Procure and contract manage external resources through the project life cycle ensuring scope documentation is to a high standard and processes are adhered to.
- Ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of the team is a top priority.
About you

- Excellent interpersonal, influencing and communication skills to ensure effective engagement with all relevant stakeholders (internally and externally).
- Experience of delivering start to finish land activities for infrastructure projects including access to land, securing land rights, and the negotiation of compensation settlements.
- Experience of working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams (engineering, legal, consenting) to support overall project delivery.
- Experience of providing project and contract management services as part of delivering complex land right projects. Experience in acquiring, and contract management of, external resources.
- Expert understanding, knowledge and experience of the legal and regulatory parameters that National Grid work within, including the range of statutory powers available, understanding how these then relate to the relevant project strategy and approach.
- Expert knowledge of the consenting regimes and processes relevant to complex projects. This includes the Planning Act (2008) Development Consent Order and Compulsory Purchase Order processes and practice including the compensation code.
- Experience providing technical excellence in expert witness and/or the willingness to train to develop this expertise.
- Experience of managing a diverse team of people to deliver a productive and sustainable work environment.
- MRICS, MRTPI or equivalent in a related area desirable but not essential.
