This position is fully remote/home based. Applications will be accepted from candidates based in the UK. This is a 12 month FTC. PLOS is a non-profit organization on a mission to drive open science forward with measurable, meaningful change in research publishing, policy, and practice. We believe in a better future where science is open to all, for all. PLOS Medicine is a leading open-access medical journal. We seek an Associate Editor to help develop and strengthen this influential venue for outstanding research and commentary on the major challenges to human health worldwide.

Reporting to the Senior Editor and Team Lead, you will work with other in-house professional editors and external editorial board members to assess submitted manuscripts, oversee peer review, and make publication decisions. You will collaborate with PLOS operations teams and vendors to ensure smooth and efficient manuscript processing, and to deliver an outstanding experience for authors, peer reviewers, editorial board members, statistical advisors, and readers. You will implement the journal’s editorial strategy, establishing and maintaining close relationships with communities engaged in research, clinical practice, and policy. At conferences and site/lab visits, you will represent PLOS Medicine, related PLOS journals, and PLOS as an organization.

You will have a growth mindset and a can-do attitude, and you will be solution-focused and a true team player. Passion for PLOS’ equitable Open Research mission is a must, as is a willingness to lead/contribute to projects such as special issues, transfers, editorial policy development, workflow auditing, and peer-review innovation. You will have research and/or clinical experience in one or more areas of the journal’s scope.

Responsibilities
  • Guide manuscripts through peer review
  • Commission Perspectives, Reviews, and other pieces
  • Collaborate with external academic editors
  • Engage in outreach to scholarly communities
  • Advocate for your research communities and for under-represented stakeholders
  • Help develop policies and special projects
  • Help resolve publication ethics/research integrity issues
Qualifications and experience
  • Experience in a research or clinical environment, publishing, or other relevant setting; experience in medical publishing strongly preferred
  • Postgraduate degree in a relevant subject area required
  • Highly organized and efficient, with strong critical assessment and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills
  • Love for fast-paced environments and proven adaptability to change
  • Demonstrate outstanding knowledge biological and medical sciences

The base salary range we’ve established for these positions is (UK) £35,000 - £47,000. PLOS also offers a comprehensive benefits package summarized below.
