The post holder will act as an experienced Advanced HPC Registered Biomedical Scientist to provide continuous and comprehensive Pathology service as an aid to effective diagnosis and treatment of patients. They will assist in the provision of a high quality, cost effective clinical service and assist in the development of the service in line with departmental objectives.
The post holder will provide training and quality management expertise in Cellular Pathology to the NCA. This will include working flexibly across NCA sites. The post holder has particular responsibility in training (staff competencies, registration and specialist portfolio candidates) and quality management. The post holder will act as a member of the senior laboratory team ensuring good governance and supporting the quality management system.
The Cellular Pathology service for NCA has two departments: Salford and Oldham. You will be mainly based at the Salford department but will support the quality and training across the NCA. The Cellular Pathology Department within the NCA processes and reports 98,000 histology requests per annum, which includes Neurology, Dermatology, Breast, Head and Neck, Gynae, GI, Urology, and Respiratory, along with 10,000 diagnostic cytology and Andrology services.
Main duties of the job:
- To manage and co-ordinate the day-to-day activities for staff training and managing the department quality management system.
- Train, develop and competency assess staff.
- Analyse and interpret results; responsible for standard and quality of results.
- Participate in the technical activities of the department requiring advanced and specialist technical knowledge.
- Participate fully in all technical work activities of the department by processing biomedical specimens requiring advanced and specialist technical knowledge.
- Proactively manage the timely and efficient throughput of the work of the Cellular Pathology department.
- Maintain registration as a biomedical scientist through continuing to meet the standards of proficiency for safe and effective practice and continuing to meet the HCPC's standards for continuing professional development.
- Be the training manager for the department.
- Deputise for the Cellular Pathology Operations Manager when required.
