We’re working with a leading provider of building automation and energy management systems (BEMS) to help them find an experienced Commissioning Engineer. This role plays a vital part in the delivery of complex BEMS and BMS installations across commercial and high-spec residential projects. You’ll be responsible for testing, verifying, and fine-tuning systems on-site, working closely with project leads, design engineers, and installation teams to ensure each system operates safely, efficiently, and in line with project specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and familiarise yourself with project documentation, including control schematics, network topologies, and operation descriptions.
- Assist in software loading, system setup, and modifications to BEMS logic or sequences as required.
- Lead or support electrical testing and pre-commissioning activities, ensuring full compliance and accurate record-keeping.
- Systematically power up and test control panels, verifying correct circuit operation and safety.
- Configure and test IP and serial networks for connected devices and field controllers.
- Calibrate and commission field devices including sensors, actuators, and digital controls.
- Tune system performance including PID loops and setpoint adjustments for energy-efficient operation.
- Conduct detailed functional testing against control strategies and operational descriptions.
- Work with engineers on 3rd-party system integration (e.g. HVAC, lighting, metering).
- Support documentation, produce commissioning reports, and assist in Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
- Train junior staff and contribute to technical development within the engineering team.
What You’ll Need
- Relevant qualifications (NVQ/HNC/HND or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Building Services, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of Building Management Systems (BMS) and Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS).
- Hands-on experience commissioning building controls or automation systems.
- Good knowledge of control panel wiring, testing procedures, and fault-finding.
- Confident with TCP/IP networking, serial communication protocols, and associated diagnostic tools (e.g., IP scanners, PING, TRACERT).
- Familiarity with commissioning tools, software interfaces, and building automation platforms.
- High attention to detail and commitment to safety, quality, and project delivery.
Preferred (But Not Essential)
- Certifications in BEMS/BMS systems such as Trend, Tridium, Distech, KNX, or similar.
- BCM01–06 modules or ECS (Building Controls) card.
- Experience working on high-end residential or commercial sites.
- Knowledge of integration with 3rd-party platforms (lighting, metering, HVAC).
- Client-facing experience with strong documentation and reporting skills.
