We are seeking a highly skilled Field Ecologist to undertake a habitat condition assessment across designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This assessment will inform future land management priorities and conservation planning.

The ideal candidate will have in-depth botanical identification skills, particularly in calcareous grassland habitats, and solid experience applying Common Standards Monitoring (CSM) methodologies on lowland grasslands.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct detailed habitat condition assessments in accordance with CSM guidelines.
  • Apply expert-level calcareous grassland botanical ID skills in the field to record and analyse species composition.
  • Provide clear, evidence-based assessments to inform future conservation and land management actions.
  • Lead and manage medium to large-scale ecological projects, ensuring timely and accurate delivery.
  • Engage and coordinate with volunteers to support field survey work and conservation initiatives.
  • Implement specific habitat management techniques in line with ecological objectives and best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant environmental legislation and policies related to SSSI, SPA, and SAC designations.
  • Collaborate with landowners, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment with land management goals.
  • Prepare reports, maps, and supporting documentation to present findings and recommendations clearly.
Essential Requirements:
  • Proven experience managing medium to large-scale ecological field projects.
  • Demonstrable experience in applying CSM methodology to lowland grassland habitats.
  • Strong calcareous grassland botanical identification skills.
  • Experience in delivering conservation and ecological programmes through volunteer engagement.
  • In-depth understanding of habitat management techniques and their practical implementation.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of legislation relating to SSSI, SPA, and SAC sites.
  • Familiarity with land management operations and best practices, including their implications for Facilities Management.
Qualifications & Memberships:
  • Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
Desirable:
  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant field.
  • Experience using GIS software and digital data recording tools.
  • Certification in First Aid, 4x4 driving, or use of field survey equipment (e.g., GPS, quadrats, etc.).
