This is an exciting time to join us, as we are in the midst of a large-scale migration to Google Cloud Platform (GCP). You’ll play a key role in this transformation, helping shape the future of our database infrastructure.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Operate and maintain mission-critical databases in both on-premise and cloud environments.
  • Support the ongoing migration of databases and microservices to GCP.
  • Collaborate closely with Platform and Reliability Engineering (PRE) teams to build resilient infrastructure.
  • Provide expert input and support to product development teams across the business.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize database performance in production and pre-production environments.
  • Ensure robust backup, recovery, and security practices are consistently applied.
  • Participate in the on-call rota to provide 24x7 support to production databases.

What you’ll bring:

  • 5+ years of experience managing databases in production environments.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, ideally Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform.
  • Experience working with CI/CD pipelines, preferably using GitLab.
  • Background in supporting high-availability (24/7) systems and production-critical services.
  • Strong expertise in Oracle and GoldenGate.
  • Experience with database platforms such as Vertica, Couchbase Capella, or CockroachDB.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation using Terraform.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native architectures, ideally within GCP.
  • Solid grasp of backup and recovery strategies and operational best practices.
  • Ability to write and tune SQL queries.
  • Programming languages such as Python and Bash.

What we’re looking for:

  • A strong team player who thrives in a collaborative, cross-functional engineering environment.
  • Someone who shares knowledge freely and contributes to a culture of continuous improvement.
  • A proactive engineer with excellent troubleshooting skills and a passion for solving complex problems.
  • A champion of best practices in database engineering, who enjoys helping others adopt them.
  • Will contribute to the high standard of support of the Rightmove databases, working well with other DBEs and supporting Engineers on a regular basis.
  • Shares ideas with the rest of the team, contributes to project work and support of the databases, works well with the wider engineering teams.
  • Be a key contributor in the migration to our cloud platform.
  • An established DBE who understands the importance of database best practices and regularly reviews existing databases making recommendations on improvements.
