Job Description:
Our Lead Bioinformatics Engineer is an experienced bioinformatician with strong competencies in software engineering, data engineering, and/or infrastructure.
This role provides technical expertise and leadership across multiple squads in the bioinformatics directorate.
It plays a key role in shaping genomic healthcare at Genomics England by leading exploration of variant annotation tooling, process, and data validation efforts across the healthcare service. An interest and expertise in variant annotation and system practical issues are highly beneficial.
The successful candidate will lead the development of best practices across the chapter and directorate to ensure high-quality, scientifically valid, production-ready code and promote their adoption.
The post holder will manage recruitment, mentoring, and line management of core and senior bioinformaticians across the Healthcare Tribe.
Everyday responsibilities include:
- Providing technical leadership at the chapter level and across multiple squads.
- Participating in Chapter and Directorate managerial meetings.
- Leading design decisions for projects.
- Providing Subject Matter Expertise in collaboration with the Scalable Tech service.
- Fostering networks of collaborators to promote innovation and knowledge sharing.
- Defining best practices for the chapter.
- Introducing innovative thinking in bioinformatics and software engineering.
- Staying updated with relevant bioinformatics, genomics, and engineering practices.
- Leading recruitment efforts.
- Managing and leading an inclusive, high-performing team.
Skills and experience for success:
Ideal candidates will have:
- Experience in leading and motivating teams inclusively.
- Experience with variant annotation tooling and development.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python), with willingness to learn others; Java experience is beneficial.
- Experience creating and deploying bioinformatics pipelines with workflow orchestrators (preferably Nextflow) and container technologies.
- Experience developing CI/CD pipelines in version control systems.
- Experience in cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS.
- Proven cross-disciplinary collaboration skills.
- Ability to communicate complex genomic issues to diverse stakeholders.
- Familiarity with best practices in software engineering and willingness to champion them.
- Ability to make evidence-supported assessments and decisions.
Qualifications include MSc or higher in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or equivalent experience.
