An established alternative network provider is expanding its Full Fibre broadband infrastructure across East Sussex and is seeking a proactive and experienced Fibre Specialist to join the team as a technical authority and quality lead.

With a growing network delivering speeds of up to 10 Gigabits for both download and upload, the organisation is deeply committed to upgrading the region's broadband capability, creating local jobs, and reinvesting in the communities it serves.

About the Role

This hands-on role is critical to ensuring the long-term reliability, resilience, and maintainability of the fibre network. The successful candidate will take responsibility for setting and enforcing fibre build quality standards, overseeing infrastructure handover, performing key splicing tasks, and mentoring junior team members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute high-quality splicing across active and passive infrastructure
  • Define and maintain physical fibre standards, including labelling, documentation, and testing
  • Conduct risk assessments and support sign-off of new infrastructure builds
  • Review network designs to ensure best practices in optical quality and maintainability
  • Act as a technical lead and mentor within the field engineering team
  • Diagnose and resolve infrastructure quality issues such as poor splices or water ingress
  • Help refine field processes, safety protocols, and operational efficiencies
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date documentation
  • Participate in occasional out-of-hours reactive work (paid overtime)

Required Skills & Experience

  • 5+ years’ experience in fibre jointing/splicing within FTTP/FTTH PON networks
  • Expertise in live network work and high-density fibre builds
  • Strong knowledge of joint closures, fibre routing, slack management, and tray organisation
  • Proficient in OTDR testing, fault diagnostics, and using core fusion splicers (e.g., Sumitomo)
  • Excellent attention to detail and pride in quality workmanship
  • Able to interpret and contribute to network and splice design diagrams
  • Confident working independently and taking ownership of infrastructure
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across the network area
  • Comfortable working at height, including pole climbing

Mandatory Certifications

  • Smart Awards (SA001 and SA002), S007, S008
  • NRSWA Unit 01 – Street Works Signing, Lighting & Guarding
  • LA – Location & Avoidance of Underground Apparatus
  • City & Guilds or equivalent certificate in Fibre Optic Splicing

Desirable

  • Familiarity with network management tools such as Apex, QGIS, and Dash Pivot
  • Experience mentoring or training junior field technicians
