A leading organisation within the UK’s nuclear energy sector is seeking an experienced Mechanical Calculation Engineer to join its expanding team in Bridgwater. The company is internationally recognised for providing innovative, high-value engineering solutions for the design, construction, maintenance, and development of nuclear infrastructure.

As a Mechanical Calculation Engineer, your primary responsibility will be to ensure the integrity of the pipe network design and its supporting structures by performing detailed piping calculations and assessing HVAC and electrical supports for various load scenarios, including dead weight, thermal expansion, and seismic activity. Expertise in finite element analysis software, especially pipe stress and RSTAB, is highly valued and considered an essential skill for this role. Additionally, knowledge of Python programming is advantageous for developing specialized tools.

Also, as a configuration coordinator, you will:

  • Manage the configuration for HPC and SZC (Sizewell C) project for piping calculation perspectives.
  • Contribute to design change process, open points mitigation coupled with rework activities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Gathering input data, analysing/updating hypothesis notes, and preparing loading description reports.
  • Engaging with various stakeholders (installation contractors, CW interfaces, other disciplines) to clarify issues.
  • Performing mechanical stress analyses: piping flexibility calculations, piping supports calculations, FEA calculations or any analysis required to resolve encountered issues.
  • Proposing appropriate and proportionate modifications if sizing criteria are not met.
  • Doing hand calculations and running anchorages macros to assess the feasibility of modification.
  • Checking calculation notes and guide drawings subcontracted to external companies.
  • Maintaining Edvance’s QA procedures in delivering the design.
  • Working with CAD designers/detailers in the preparation of the design drawings.

Configuration Design Coordination Duties:

  • Assist in overseeing the configuration of calculation inputs, assumptions, and change tracking for major UK nuclear plant projects.
  • Help facilitate interface resolution between disciplines and maintain clarity in design intent across changes and rework stages.
  • Ensure proper traceability and documentation of design decisions, especially for safety- and performance-critical systems.

Required Qualifications & Background:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a role involving mechanical stress or piping calculations—ideally within the nuclear or energy sector.
  • Proficiency with relevant engineering codes and standards (e.g. RCC-M, ASME, EUROCODE).
  • Skilled in simulation and design tools such as ANSYS (Workbench/APDL), PIPESTRESS, RSTAB, PDMS, and Navisworks.
  • Strong background in FEA, piping analysis, and structural modelling.
  • Working knowledge of Python or similar scripting tools for automation or analysis enhancement.
  • Ability to operate effectively within a multicultural project environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong commitment to ongoing professional and technical development.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience:

  • Previous involvement in EPR (European Pressurised Reactor) or comparable nuclear infrastructure programs.
  • Experience with UK-based engineering standards and nuclear regulatory expectations.
  • Familiarity with RCC-M Section C3650.
  • Exposure to tools such as CALTUY or BEAM STRESS for support design.
  • Strong coordination skills across multi-disciplinary engineering teams.

Languages:

  • English: Fluent (mandatory).
  • French: Advantageous, but not essential.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive salary.
  • Accommodation allowance.
