Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, assist in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care. Work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families.

Main duties of the job:

  • Undertake general patient observations including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation levels, as per NICE Guidelines, recording general appearance and fluid balance, and report anything untoward to the registered health professional.
  • Under supervision of the registered health professional, undertake a range of clinical duties and skills (including insertion and removal of venous cannula, removal of urinary catheters, undertaking simple dry dressings using an aseptic technique, venepuncture, collection of patient specimens for laboratory testing, preparation and assistance in clinical procedures, urinary catheter etc.), undertake the recordings of ECG.
  • Participate in the evaluation of care and completion of patient documents.
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
  • Undertake transfer and escort of patients as identified by the supervising registered health professional depending on the patients' dependency, as directed to Theatres, Catheter Labs and other Clinical Departments for investigations.
  • Undertake safe disposal of waste and sharps as per Trust policy.
  • Care of patients' property and valuables in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Support the role of ward clerk / patient liaison clerk.

Person Specification:

Essential Qualifications & Education:

  • Successful completion of the Care Certificate.
  • Be competent in venepuncture.
  • Be competent in cannula insertion.
  • Be competent in the recordings for ECG.
  • Be competent in the recording of clinical sign observations.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in numeracy and literacy skills at level 2 or above.

Knowledge & Experience:

  • Experience in a healthcare environment / life experience.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate in a variety of settings with patients of varying levels of understanding.
  • Be competent in the delivery of care as directed by the registered health professional.
  • Ability to develop effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues in the health care setting.
  • Basic IT skills in email and EPR recordings.
