We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Mental Health Nurse with proficiency in British Sign Language (BSL) Level 1 or 2 to join our dedicated team. This role is ideal for a nurse passionate about delivering inclusive mental health care to Deaf and hard-of-hearing service users, as well as those with diverse communication needs. You will work within a multi-disciplinary team to provide high-quality, person-centred care to individuals experiencing a range of mental health challenges. Your BSL knowledge will be invaluable in enhancing communication, reducing barriers to care, and supporting recovery-focused interventions.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of mental health needs, including risk assessments and care planning.
- Deliver evidence-based interventions and therapeutic support to service users.
- Use British Sign Language to communicate effectively with Deaf or hard-of-hearing patients, relatives, and carers.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and occupational therapists.
- Promote patient engagement through accessible communication and culturally competent care.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in line with legal and professional standards.
- Support service users in crisis, providing de-escalation and safety planning.
- Contribute to the development of inclusive practice within the service.
Requirements:
- Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) with valid NMC registration.
- Experience working in community or inpatient mental health settings.
- BSL Level 1 or 2 qualification (must be willing to work towards Level 2 if currently Level 1).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to equality, diversity, and person-centred care.
- Experience working with Deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals.
- Previous experience in delivering culturally competent or accessible mental health services.
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and the social model of disability.
