To work across Channel 4 News digital platforms, overseeing the output of high impact content as Online News Editor, Digital duty editor or Digital planning editor. To oversee the output of daily content for social platforms from original digital, breaking news and newsgathering and linear content. To also oversee the delivery of Digital First material including original Digital short and medium form video content, as well as text-based content for our website and into Google Showcase. To help support the management of the Leeds newsroom. This work of creating new website pages will be done by a small team of sub-editors and producers, with the News Editor helping oversee the commissioning and workflow. This role may involve shift work, weekend work, and some travel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work across Channel 4 News digital platforms, focusing on overseeing the output of daily content for social platforms.
  • Run and have oversight of the digital social news desk on a day-to-day basis, working as, and overseeing, the online news editor.
  • Contribute at a senior level to the editorial output and daily news management of the digital team, ensuring output meets Channel 4 News standards.
  • Show distinctive judgement about Digital First and made-for-social storytelling.
  • Provide imaginative treatments for complex stories and present complex ideas simply and compellingly in shortform formats such as Reels and TikTok.
  • Ensure stories are accurate and comply with the law and relevant regulations.
  • Maintain the highest standards of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
  • Work in accordance with ITN guidelines on health and safety in the office and in the field.
  • Occasionally work in the field, at home and abroad, during breaking news.
  • Deal professionally with members of the public and guests.

Key Requirements:

  • A digital native who works to the highest editorial standards.
  • Track record of producing high-quality popular content across multiple social platforms.
  • Newsgathering experience and knowledge of working in the field.
  • An experienced manager of digital and social teams.
  • A good working knowledge of video editing software such as Premiere is helpful.
  • An experienced journalist with at least 7 years’ experience dealing with the highest standards of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Evidence of developing and mentoring producers and freelancers and creating an inclusive team.
  • Expert understanding and knowledge of social media, audience development and experience working across a wide variety of platforms.
  • Exceptional team-working skills, able to multitask to liaise with numerous stakeholders.
  • Strong digital news judgement – with a knowledge of what will play well on social.
  • Ability to innovate in formats on TV and digital media.
  • Technical adaptability and flexibility.
  • Highly developed understanding of complex legal situations and understanding of ITN Legal Compliance procedures.
  • Understanding of Channel 4 News agenda.
  • Good interpersonal skills - a team player with personal authority and the ability to manage a group of people.
  • Calm under pressure with the ability to adapt and be flexible in task and role.
  • Ability to work to a deadline.
  • Play an authoritative role in team editorial meetings presenting ideas persuasively.
  • Act with responsibility and common sense in the field and office, in compliance with ITN’s Health and Safety Policies.
