Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

We are looking to appoint dynamic, innovative and forward-thinking Consultants in Trauma & Orthopaedics for a period of 6 months to provide advice and specialist expertise throughout the full range of Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery, whilst we are appointing into vacancies.

There are 3 posts available to cover 3 of the following vacancies: Trauma / Hip and / or Knee / Foot & Ankle / Shoulder & Elbow.

You will be joining our team of consultants to provide general Trauma & Orthopaedic expertise to our population from both Torbay Hospital, but also with some elective operating at the South West Ambulatory Orthopaedic Centre (Nightingale Exeter - SWAOC). We are part of a highly regarded DGH both locally and nationally, in a lovely part of the country between the South Coast and Dartmoor National Park and are a progressive department constantly seeking to improve our service delivery and with an active research interest both locally and by involvement in national trials. South Devon is recognised as a health community which has achieved considerable improvements in patient care due to integrated working and good relationships with our community partners.

Main duties of the job:

• The successful candidates will be expected to provide advice and specialist expertise throughout the full range of Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery, although it is recognised that he/she will have a broad range of skills with a special interest in either Trauma / Foot and Ankle / Hip and/or Knee / Shoulder and Elbow.
• Senior and middle grade medical staff are actively involved in teaching; practical training and audit, weekly tutorials, monthly audit meetings and clinical conferences at Torbay, and Plymouth. Ad hoc teaching of visiting undergraduates or student electives/postgraduate lectures along with General Medical, Dental Practitioners and junior medical staff will also be a requirement.
• Attendance at monthly Clinical Audit meetings is expected. Research is encouraged, along with involvement in MDT teaching. Attendance at Clinical Governance/Clinical Risk/Health & Safety meetings is also expected.
• On-call commitment is 1:12 with prospective cover. Comprising micro ward round, ad-hoc lists, clinics and joint operating. On-call is truncated into a one week block where the consultant is not routinely scheduled elective commitments. There is an all day consultant-delivered trauma list on Saturday and Sunday, and 1 night every 3rd weekday is an overnight non-resident on-call session.
• General commitments include attendance at departmental meetings which may be out of hours, and involvement in clinical and educational supervision roles.

About Us:

The trauma and orthopaedic directorate sits within the Planned Care / Surgery Care Group at Torbay Hospital. A comprehensive outpatient service is provided to all South Devon patients, both for trauma and elective orthopaedics. Fracture clinics are held at Torbay Hospital each weekday morning. Elective outpatient clinics currently take place at Torbay and Newton Abbot Hospitals.

We are situated in a very beautiful part of the country in the South West of England with a favourable mild climate close to both sea and moors. Opportunities for outdoor activities both on and off the water abound, with easy access to the neighbouring centres of Plymouth and Exeter.

Person Specification:

• Qualifications:

• Essential: GMC registration (with licence to practice), CCT Specialist Registration or will obtain within 6 months of interview date, CESR, Minimum of English Level 2 (GCSE grade C or equivalent), IELTS or graduate of a UK Medical School, ATLS / APLS / ALS.
• Desirable: Distinctions, scholarships, prizes, Other degrees, e.g. BSc, MSc, MD, At least three years in Higher Training in relevant specialty.

• Essential: Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems, Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients, Ability to prioritise clinical need, Ability to supervise multi-disciplinary teams, Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of the department, Ability to demonstrate familiarity with and understanding of NHS structures, management and current political issues, including awareness of national strategic plans and constraints, Ability to demonstrate willingness to lead clinical teams and develop an effective specialist clinical service, Experience of Audit and Management, Proven ability to teach clinical skills within multi-disciplinary teams applying evidence based knowledge, Willingness and ability to contribute to departmental and Trust teaching programmes.
• Desirable: Evidence of innovative development and implementation of guidance, Evidence of involving patients in practice, Active interest in IT, Ability to supervise postgraduate research, Evidence of relevant research, publications or presentations.

• Essential: Good spoken and written English language skills, Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives and staff, Honesty and reliability, Ability to work in a team.
• Desirable: Evidence of patient and colleague feedback, Enquiring critical approach to work.
