About the role

Reporting to the Head of Engineering and Operations, the role will involve directing the AMO (Atomic, Molecular and Optical) Theory and Simulation team who are designing ion-traps and benchmarking the performance of quantum networking protocols. The Group Lead role involves supporting the technical teams in their career development and technical endeavours, supporting them in identifying technical problems that are valuable to solve, and ways to develop robust workflows. There will thus be opportunities for creative thinking and contributing to the company's strategy.

The successful candidate will join a highly collaborative environment and should be able to draw on their experience to strengthen system-level and strategic thinking within the team. The role will also involve coordinating with their peer AMO Group Lead (Experimental group) and guiding project-based Technical Leads to stand performant quantum network testbeds. In turn, they will be supported by our management team, and more specifically by our VP of Technology, our Programme Manager and our Head of Engineering and Operations for day-to-day operations.

Responsibilities

  • Line management of the AMO Theory and Simulation Group, facilitating their development towards career goals; aligning the growth of their skills with the needs of Nu Quantum.
  • Responsible for technical decisions and process improvement within the team, building on your technical expertise to assist with system architecture, decision making, robust workflows, and technical delivery.
  • Meeting with the Project Management Office and Finance teams to coordinate on budget forecast and tooling.
  • Assisting with technical documentation, including requirements, and technical reporting.
  • Embodying our company values, championing scientific integrity and fostering a collaborative working environment.
  • Representing the company at industry and research events, liaising with collaborators and suppliers, and contributing to the company's strategy.

Requirements

Your Skills, Qualifications, and Experience:

  • Postgraduate-level qualification in AMO physics with applications relating to quantum computing or quantum simulation.
  • Simulation skills in Comsol, ANSYS or equivalent for trap design and ion shuttling.
  • Master-equation modelling using QutiP, Mathematica, MathLab or equivalent.
  • Technical expertise spanning qubit control and quantum optics and experimental techniques.
  • Good knowledge of optical systems and electronics.
  • Experience with running a developing a team, being responsible for technical delivery and budget planning (e.g. you might be a Technical Lead in Industry, Junior group lead in Academia or equivalent roles).
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Strong data management and experience with cross-disciplinary workflows.

Desirable skills and experience (not required, but beneficial):

  • Industry experience.
  • Knowledgeable in Quantum Error Correction with atomic/ionic systems.
  • Experience in the design of ion-traps.
