An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Departmental Manager to join the Chemistry Department, part of the Faculty of Mathematical & Physical Sciences (MAPS).

The Chemistry Department at UCL is the oldest in England, and today is one of the best in the UK, being ranked 3rd overall in the UK in REF (2021). The department is located in Bloomsbury and is committed to supporting excellence in both research and teaching. The department offers undergraduate BSc and MSci programmes in Chemistry and currently teaches ~600 undergraduates registered in Chemistry as well as students who select Chemistry on the Natural Sciences programme and first year Chemistry for life scientists. The department also offers a number of Postgraduate Taught Masters courses with about 80 students per year and has an overall Postgraduate Research student school of about 250 students.

About the role

The Departmental Manager will manage the operational infrastructure of the department to support teaching, research, administration and other departmental activities. The appointee will manage and develop key departmental resources including staff; finances; health & safety; security; estates and administration.

The Departmental Manager will assume full responsibility for the management and development of professional services within the Chemistry Department, ensuring that systems are fit for purpose and that UCL, Faculty and Departmental policies and strategies are fully implemented at all times.

About you

The post holder will have a proven track record in administration and management within a higher education environment or similar environment. The post-holder will have experience of recruitment and effective development of staff with demonstrable experience of effective budgetary management and control, including financial reporting and analysis. They will be able to demonstrate strong negotiation skills to work with and through others.
