From 11 UK sites, our team of nearly 1,000 people delivers unique capabilities across space, air, land, sea and cyber for military, security and commercial customers across the UK and worldwide.

This role is instrumental to the successful leadership and growth of a UK based business unit, responsible for a £80M / 400 person UK Limited company.

The role encompasses full P&L responsibility, along with the strategic direction and leadership for an organisation that encompasses the full end to end lifecycle of; winning business, project/programme management and delivery, product development and operational excellence.

The role operates within both an international leadership team as well as a US-based matrix organisation, and therefore the ability to work positively and constructively in a matrix environment, with exceptional influence, cultural leadership and stakeholder management is an essential requirement of this role.

The business leader is responsible for the planning and provision of customer focused delivery and services across the organisation, and for partnering with functional leadership to oversee all aspects of business management for the business. The role is responsible for delivering, and directing activities to achieve financial performance and return on capital to the shareholders of the organisation, in accordance with the targets as set and agreed with the broader corporation.

What the role will involve

The responsibilities of your role will include the following:

  • Be an integral and influential member of an International Defence Executive team
  • Provide day-to-day leadership of a UK based business, in accordance with corporate processes, within a large US matrix organisation
  • Management of a multi-country, multi-cultural customer base
  • Ensure the business meets its customer delivery commitments, and maintains a competitive and respected position in the marketplace
  • Define and deliver a 3-year vision and strategy for the business along with the appropriate annual objectives, operating plan and investment cases
  • Prepare the Company’s annual operating plan, with responsibility to deliver and beat the plan
  • Ensure the Quality Management System (QMS) and Company’s records are suitably maintained and adhered to
  • Lead the development and implementation business strategies aligned to our customer and business mission(s) and corporate demands
  • Set annual staff goals, objectives aligned to the overall company growth plans
  • Increase our market position and share in all our domestic and international regions
  • Be the Executive Champion for key and strategic pursuits within the business, as required
  • Establish trusted relationships with senior/executive customers and industrial stakeholders
  • Provide credible thought-leadership within the company and across wider industry
  • Lead and inspire the leadership team and all employees through all aspects of change, challenge and opportunities, providing the vision and drive for the business strategy
  • Build a diverse and effective leadership team by providing guidance, coaching and motivation
  • Provide a safe & respectful environment for employees and to operate in accordance with company values and high standards of business ethics, applicable laws and codes of practice.
  • Operate in accordance with company policies and procedures and ensures compliance with all contractual and legal obligations

What you’ll bring

The role requires the following experience and skills:

  • Post-graduate Business Degree Level Education or equivalent experience in related business discipline for the management of a business in the Government, Defence and Commercial sectors.
  • Proven experience and track record of delivering growth in the UK and International Defence Market
  • In depth knowledge and experience of corporate governance and managerial best practices
  • Ability to demonstrate people centric leadership, delivering targets through the growth of the business unit team and staff
  • An analytical mind capable of entrepreneurial thinking to solve internal and customer problems
  • Demonstrable organisation and leadership skills that demonstrate openness to change
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and public speaking skills
  • Strong, effective leadership, mentoring and conflict resolution skills
  • High level of emotional intelligence
  • Highest ethical standards, integrity and conduct
  • Strong communication skills to convey concepts to stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.
  • Outstanding program management skills with the ability to manage multiple, complex activities and achieve tight deadlines
