We are looking for a Technical Demonstrator to assist in the provision and demonstration of specialist technical and practical equipment primarily in the fields of environmental science and geography, but including associated processes and techniques that support academic and commercial programmes across the Schools Technical Services.
About the Role
- Provide technical support to tutors and students during laboratory sessions and field work in areas including environmental science, geography and ecology as required, and support tutors in the application and demonstration of technical equipment (i.e. UV-Vis and emission spectrophotometry, liquid chromatography, data loggers, field meters, survey equipment and associated resources) in workshops, technical demos and open learning sessions.
- Assist tutors in the development of the curriculum and develop and deliver supporting workshop and learning sessions.
- Supervise students in learning activities and sessions as directed by lead module tutors, taking responsibility for health and safety requirements.
- Participate in staff development training programmes as requested by the line manager.
- Assist in managing and maintaining specialist equipment, and in administration of the booking system for said equipment.
- Ensure adequate provision of materials and equipment for students and staff for teaching, workshops, research/project and income generating work.
- Keep accurate records and maintain inventories of equipment and materials for use by authorised staff in accordance with relevant University policies and laws.
- Work with other technical demonstrators in devising proposals for equipment/software upgrade, replacement and expansion.
- Liaise with the authorised signatory to raise orders on the relevant budget code, taking delivery of ordered goods and checking all related data and records before payment is authorised.
- Take responsibility for facilities, ensuring Health & Safety compliance in all respects for students and others using facilities, including responsibility for correct storage and disposal of materials.
- Undertake risk assessments of workshop, substances, and machinery with all affiliated record keeping and implementation.
- Carry out any other duty commensurate with skills level, role and grade.
About You
- Experience of field work survey techniques and equipment.
- Experience of environmental laboratory techniques and equipment to prepare and extract analytes from a range of matrices including water, soil and sediment to assess physical, chemical and biological parameters and pollution.
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures and responsibilities in the specialist area.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with spatial mapping software (i.e. QGIS, ArcGIS).
- Ability to work successfully as part of a team.
- Excellent organisational/administrative skills, appropriate to the demands of the position.
- Ability to respond flexibly and reliably to complex workloads and prioritise conflicting demands.
Additional Information
- Salary Grade Ac1 - Starting from £33,482 rising to £37,174 per annum.
- This is a full time, permanent role.
- Some evening and weekend working may be required for this role.
