As a Water Quality Officer, you will perform the collection of water samples for regulatory and operational purposes. This role involves gathering samples from customer homes, ensuring outstanding customer service, as well as from various water treatment plants. You will transport these samples to a local depot which are then transferred to the lab for testing and whilst adhering to statutory and company guidelines, including those set by DWI, UKAS, and EA.

This position is crucial in helping United Utilities meet its regulatory requirements and maintain high standards of water quality.

The working hours for this role are 37 hours per week 11am-7pm, Monday – Friday. Additionally, you will participate in a standby rota on a frequency of 1 in 8 days, plus contractual weekends 1 in 8.

• Manage and prioritise your planned and reactive work.
• Collect water and wastewater samples following regulatory and quality procedures, liaising with external stakeholders.
• Ensure compliance with security protocols, health and safety procedures, and perform task-based risk assessments.
• Perform field tests (e.g., pH, free and total chlorine, taste and odour and turbidity) and maintain meters through AQC testing, participation in PT and weekly calibrations.
• Provide excellent customer service. You’ll be visiting customers in their homes, so it’s important to be confident and make them feel comfortable and welcome in your presence.
• Safely operate the sampling vehicle.

What will make you successful in the role? We’re looking for:

• Proven experience working in a customer orientated environment with excellent customer service skills.
• Basic IT & data entry skills.

During the selection process, we will assess:

• Verbal and written communication skills (GCSE standard).
• Taste and Odour Testing Panel.
• Problem-solving abilities.
• Teamwork skills.

It would be desirable for you to have:

• Previous sampling experience.
• Experience of lone working and managing your time effectively.
• An understanding of UKAS and DWI accreditation standards and practices in line with ISO17025.
