We are seeking a suitably qualified candidate for this exciting opportunity as a Bathymetry Technical Lead working for a world leading centre for hydrography and bathymetry. The organisation works with a wide range of data suppliers and partners to support maritime navigation, safety, security and marine development around the UK and worldwide.
Role Overview
- The role is a hybrid role – working 2-3 days a week in the office and the remaining days home based.
- The Head Office is in Somerset so relocation would probably be required.
- To provide advice and make key decisions on the collection and handling of bathymetric data.
- To initiate and deliver the development of hydrographic survey and bathymetry expertise within the centre.
- To support research and innovation, including writing policy and procedures.
- To support survey activities both internally and in the field.
- Be the subject matter expert for bathymetric data acquisition, processing and data-basing, seeking continuous improvement of deliverables and processing procedures.
- Liaise with equipment/software manufacturers and survey contractors on the best formats, systems, and practices. Ensure use of bathymetric data and technology aligns with current best available practice.
- Develop, coach and mentor Bathymetry staff in development posts and those with survey experience/qualifications. Facilitate field visits to survey vessels, internal training and external education as required.
- Lead the design and oversee the processes which provide the analysis and processing of incoming complex bathymetric datasets, the writing of verification reports and the promulgation of verified data to the other systems that require it.
- Support and lead technical projects relating to Bathymetry.
- Provide processes for developing technologies to be embedded E.g., Ping 2 ECDIS, Satellite Derived Bathymetry, etc.
- Represent the organisation externally at conferences and meetings.
- Coordinate the planning and resourcing requirements to deliver tasks on time/on budget.
- Acting as Client Representative during contract surveys to ensure compliance.
Candidate Requirements
- A degree level hydrographic surveying qualification from an FIG/IHO/ICA Category A accredited course, or IFHS HPAS Level 1 (or higher) accreditation.
- Significant (at least 3+ years) experience of conducting acoustic swathe surveys, including experience with associated survey equipment (e.g., positioning and motion sensor equipment).
- Expert knowledge of bathymetric data processing, data formats and deliverables.
- High level of IT literacy, including Caris HIPS/SIPS.
- Experience of planning hydrographic surveys.

- A starting salary of £47,293pa.
- 35.5 days’ holiday per year (inc. Bank Holidays) rising to 40.5 days per year after 5 years.
