Your future role

The Principal Hardware Engineer will lead the development, design, introduction and delivery and in service support of control centre products into the UK market. This portfolio currently includes Modular Control System, Delphin, Sapphire and Automated Route Setting (MARS) along with their associated processes and tools. The role incorporates hardware design, implementation, testing and support of software integration and team management.

We’ll look to you for:

  • Lead the design and development of control centre hardware products and the development/improvement of control centre tools and processes and management of product obsolescence.
  • Ensure activities are delivered on time and to budget including work package management.
  • Provide mentorship to other team members, including the provision of annual reviews and development plans.
  • Support of product approval, software integration and project delivery, ensuring that the products, tools and processes remain fit for purpose and enable continuous improvement of them by proactively dealing with obsolescence.
  • Design and development at component/PCB/enclosure level and integration of COTS based hardware products/systems with custom application software, including tools and processes within the business.

  • Degree or equivalent experience in an electronics/electrical engineering discipline.
  • C&G Requirements for Electrical Installations (16th or 17th edition).
  • IPC Advanced Designer Certification.
  • Analogue and digital circuit design including COM carrier board design.
  • PCB design and layout (Altium preferred).
  • Proficient with designing for EMC compliance with sound knowledge of EMC testing.
  • Able to build/specify/deploy PC based solutions, including OS deployment and configuration.
  • Able to produce product V&V test specifications and perform testing.

Experience or understanding of some or all of the following:

  • Digital hardware and firmware.
  • FPGA and CPLDs.
  • RTOS.
  • Housekeeping with Intel processors.
  • Carrier boards for SoM and CoM.
  • Bus translation e.g., PCIe to local buses.
  • Serial and parallel buses.
  • Working to process.
  • Working from and creating requirements/test specifications.
  • Design and code reviews.
  • Configuration/version control.
  • Design analysis – timing diagrams etc.
  • Memory technologies.
  • Spartan and Virtex FPGA families or similar.
  • Ability to read schematics/datasheets.
  • BSPs.
  • Knowledge of embedded software and operating systems.
  • Setting up test environments.
  • Set-up and configuration of development tools.
  • V&V.
  • Characterisation of HW.
  • Obsolescence management.
