Salary: £20.73 LTD - £16.65 PAYE.

Role Summary:

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Housing Officer to join a proactive Housing team serving the Totnes and Tavistock areas. This 6-month temporary role focuses on managing complex homelessness and housing needs cases while also supporting the development of the wider housing options team. You will provide in-depth housing advice, make formal homelessness decisions on behalf of the Council, and represent the authority at multi-agency meetings. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a solid understanding of the Homelessness Reduction Act and strong casework skills to make a real difference.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a senior caseworker for households approaching as homeless or at risk of homelessness.
  • Make decisions under the Housing Act 1996 (as amended) and Homelessness Reduction Act 2017.
  • Handle complex cases and assess homelessness referrals from other local authorities.
  • Provide housing advice including advocacy, mediation, and referrals to specialist agencies.
  • Liaise with statutory services and attend safeguarding and child protection meetings.
  • Maintain accurate records, draft clear reports, and contribute to team development.
  • Promote digital access to services and ensure compliance with GDPR and safeguarding policies.

Requirements:

  • Educated to A-level or equivalent experience in housing or homelessness casework.
  • Excellent working knowledge of homelessness legislation and tenancy law.
  • Experience working with complex and vulnerable client groups.
  • Ability to manage high-volume casework and make robust legal decisions.
  • IT-literate, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to work flexibly, including occasional out-of-hours work.
  • A positive, empathetic and proactive approach with a strong sense of accountability.
