We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to train as a Trading Standards Enforcement Officer to help enforce new laws on tobacco, cigarettes, and vapes - alongside the full spectrum of trading standards responsibilities. Trading Standards plays a key role in tackling the rise in illicit tobacco and vape products. In the past year alone, over a million illegal vapes, 19 million counterfeit cigarettes, and more than 5,000kg of illicit tobacco were seized nationwide. With new legislation in place, this role will be vital in ensuring compliance across Derbyshire.
We are offering a 4 year fixed term contract to join us as an Enforcement Officer, working and training alongside Trading Standards professionals, supporting local businesses and helping consumers by tackling unfair and unsafe trading practices through enforcement, advice and education.
What you will do:
- Ensure that tobacco and vape products are sold legally
- Stop the supply of cigarettes, alcohol and vapes to children
- Prevent rogue traders preying on the public (including older people or the most vulnerable) with false claims and scams
- Stop the sale of dangerous toys and products
- Ensure that the food we eat contains what it says on the label
- Prevent outbreaks of animal diseases
- Ensure that consumers get what they pay for, both online and in shops, and so much more
How you will do it:
- Provide advice to traders and consumers on consumer protection laws
- Investigate complaints and identify breaches of Trading Standards legislation
- Carry out inspections and visits to businesses and consumers across the county
- Support the wider Trading Standards service as needed
- Operate in line with statutory enforcement powers, legal duties, and regulatory codes of practice

What you will learn:
You will be supported to progress your career in Trading Standards through undertaking a Level 6 Trading Standards Apprenticeship over 29 months. The training will focus on tobacco and vape enforcement, plus one of the following areas:
- Food standards
- Animal feed
- Animal health and welfare
- Consumer product safety

Our team is based in Matlock, but we currently operate on a hybrid working model as part of our Modern Ways of Working programme. There will be an opportunity to discuss this at interview.
