Job Details Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK Salary: £36,130 to £45,413, with potential progression to £48,149 Grade: 7 Contract: Full-time, Fixed Term until March 2027 Number of positions: 2 Closing date: 20th May 2025 Background Atom interferometry is a versatile tool for fundamental research and quantum sensing applications. The Quantum Sensing Group at the University of Birmingham is seeking candidates interested in research into cold atom gravity gradient sensing, focusing on experimental and modelling techniques to enhance atom interferometers\’ resilience, including innovative methods like optimal control and novel interferometry schemes. Role Summary The successful candidate will work on a Prosperity Partnership project collaborating with industry partners from aerospace, microfabrication, and innovation sectors, addressing challenges in integrating quantum sensors into complex systems. They will join Birmingham\’s vibrant quantum technology research community, which leads the UK Quantum Technology Research Hub in Sensing, Imaging and Timing (QuSIT). Main Duties Conduct research on atom interferometry, focusing on complex systems and robustness on moving platforms Develop new models, techniques, and methods Collect and analyze research data Disseminate findings via publications and seminars Supervise students and support research funding applications Person Specification PhD (or near completion) in physics, engineering, or related field Research experience in quantum technologies, such as atom interferometry Excellent communication skills in English Strong analytical skills and experience in collaborative projects Ability to lead and manage research activities Application Requirements Full academic CV with publications Research statement (max 1 page) Applicants should demonstrate academic citizenship, develop respectful relationships, and positively impact colleagues and students.
