Job overview:
- Provide clinical scientific and radiation protection services in support of uses of ionising radiation.
- Participate in service development and improvement.

Main duties of the job:
- Support the Clinical and Radiation Physics service within Diagnostic radiography.
- Undertake quality control tests on imaging equipment (i.e. CT scanners, general x-ray, dental and interventional radiology) and other associated equipment to the relevant standards.
- Support Radiation Protection Advisers and Medical Physics Experts in providing a high quality and effective radiation protection service.
- Involvement in teaching and training of a range of staff groups including external customers such as FRCR and University of Plymouth.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:
- PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
- Specialist Duties / Appointed Expert
- HCPC Registered Clinical Scientist Specialising in Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation protection
- Analyse data and make professional judgments based on the findings to inform safe and appropriate clinical use of the equipment.
- Maintain and develop protocols and procedures for testing of x-ray equipment, for both the high level physics tests, and routine testing carried out by radiographers in other departments, in accordance with regional and national guidelines, to satisfy legislative requirements.
- Develop and maintain IT solutions for departmental activities. This includes development and maintenance of spreadsheets and databases, simple networking and specialist analytical tools.
- In liaison with the Medical Physics Expert(s) and senior staff from other departments, assist in drafting specifications for, and in the evaluation of, major items of radiological equipment.
- Provide written and oral reports to staff and customers providing advice and interpretation where required.
Person specification:
- Qualifications
- Honours degree in a relevant subject [e.g. Physics] or equivalent or equivalent level of proven knowledge & demonstrable experience.
- HCPC registered as a Clinical Scientist.
- Advanced proven knowledge of radiation protection legislation in healthcare and biomedical research.
- Advanced proven knowledge of physics of imaging in Medicine.
- Record of Scientific publications in relevant peer reviewed journals.
- Advanced proven knowledge of the physics of digital image detectors.
- Good communication skills and ability to communicate effectively.
- Able to make judgements on test results and report interpretation to customers.
