Following its recent acquisition by SLR, Wardell Armstrong now forms part of a leading global environmental and sustainability consultancy working on projects across the world from over 100 offices. We are seeking a knowledgeable and experienced Utility Consultant to join our team. The ideal candidate will have expertise in utility searches, procurement of new utility connections and utility diversions, site investigation, and utility drawings. The ideal candidate will have between 2 years and 5 years of experience as a minimum.

Overview of team / business area:

The teams are involved in various stages of a project, from pre-acquisition and looking at land for new build, regeneration or infrastructure projects and understanding potential utility constraints and costs, through concept and detailed design, and utility procurement and obtaining costs for utility connections and diversions. Project work is varied, and there will be a strong focus on renewable energy, infrastructure and residential schemes as well as other commercial development projects.

The role:

  • Undertaking a suite of utility searches to offer a comprehensive initial risk screen of existing utility infrastructure including electric, water, drainage, gas, telecoms, communication, tunnel and pipeline companies and independent network operators.
  • Preparing utility maps and drawings showing the type, location and depth of various services, including combined drawings with other disciplines such as M&E Consultants, drainage and landscape.
  • Managing projects, assisting team leads with managing resource allocation, addressing any client feedback and ensuring effective communications on all projects.
  • Producing technical reports that summarise existing utility assets, present PAS 128 compliant utility records, present budget costs and inform strategy for new utility connections, discuss existing utility network capacities and potential reinforcement costs, obtain C3 or C4 budget costs for diversions.
  • Prepare Utility Statements for planning submissions.
  • Interpreting client utility requirements and understanding scheme drawings.
  • Reviewing utility designs against client designs, to identify potential risks and savings.
  • Evaluating utility assets as shown on utility record drawings and preparing feasibility assessments against client proposals.
  • Advising on procurement strategies for new utility connections, diversionary works and disconnections.
  • Assessing utility plans and undertaking feasibility studies, identifying risk areas and potential costs.
  • Liaison with utility companies with regards to obtaining utility easement and wayleave information.
  • Undertaking NRSWA 1991 C1-C9 processes.

About you:

  • Hold or be working towards a degree and/or an equivalent professional qualification in engineering, project management or similar.
  • Experience in technical aspects of utility works, including loading calculations, network reinforcement and design, along with the ability to understand the impact of utility constraints on a scheme.
  • A firm grounding in client-facing consultancy, an ability to manage lines of communication with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • A thorough understanding of the UK utility market and associated regulatory framework, including competition in connections.
  • Have an understanding or experience of working in the engineering industry.
  • Demonstrable experience with accurate report writing.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and other GIS systems/drawing software.
  • A thorough understanding of PAS 128 Level D and HSG47 compliance.
  • A full UK driving licence essential and access to own car is essential.
