Job Purpose: The Anaesthetist is responsible for delivering high-quality anaesthetic care to patients undergoing surgical and non-surgical procedures at Merchant City Medical Group Day Hospital. This role ensures patient safety, comfort, and optimal outcomes before, during, and after anaesthesia in a day surgery setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pre-Anaesthetic Assessment: Conduct thorough pre-anaesthetic evaluations, including reviewing medical history, current medications, and allergies. Discuss anaesthetic options and obtain informed consent from patients. Identify and mitigate potential anaesthetic risks, collaborating with the multidisciplinary team as needed.
  • Administration of Anaesthesia: Administer general, regional, or local anaesthesia, tailoring techniques to individual patient needs and surgical requirements. Monitor and manage patients' physiological parameters throughout procedures, ensuring safety and stability.
  • Intraoperative Care: Work collaboratively with surgeons, scrub nurses, and theatre staff to maintain optimal conditions for surgery. Respond promptly to any anaesthetic or surgical complications.
  • Post-Anaesthetic Care: Oversee patient recovery from anaesthesia in the post-anaesthetic care unit (PACU), ensuring a smooth transition to full consciousness. Provide immediate support for post-operative complications, including pain management and airway issues.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Lead the management of anaesthetic-related emergencies, such as difficult intubation or malignant hyperthermia, following established protocols. Participate in emergency transfer procedures if required.
  • Documentation and Compliance: Maintain accurate, detailed, and timely records of anaesthetic care in compliance with Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) guidelines and organizational policies. Ensure adherence to national guidelines, including those set by the Royal College of Anaesthetists and General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Continuous Professional Development: Stay up to date with advances in anaesthetic techniques, equipment, and patient safety initiatives. Participate in audits, clinical governance activities, and peer reviews to improve service quality.
  • Leadership and Training: Provide guidance and support to junior staff and anaesthetic practitioners. Participate in the training and education of theatre staff on anaesthetic-related topics.

Essential Qualifications and Skills:

  • Medical Qualification: MBChB or equivalent.
  • Anaesthetic Training: Completion of specialist anaesthetic training (CCT or equivalent).
  • Registration: Full GMC registration with a license to practice and inclusion on the Specialist Register for Anaesthesia.
  • Experience: Significant experience in providing anaesthetic care in elective surgical settings, preferably in day surgery.
  • Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of anaesthetic pharmacology, airway management, and perioperative care.
  • Skills: Proficiency in managing complex airways, regional anaesthesia techniques, and patient emergencies.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in hair transplant procedures or cosmetic surgeries.
  • Knowledge of Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) standards for day surgery.
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification.

Working Conditions:

  • Operates within a day surgery environment, requiring flexibility to meet the needs of the service.
