Leonardo Southampton has a strong heritage in Infrared Detectors since the 1950s. Designed and built in the UK, Leonardo’s Detectors and thermal imaging sensors play a crucial role in providing visibility and situational awareness, no matter what the environmental conditions.

We have a position available for a Test Systems Engineer to conduct Environmental Testing on our range of Infrared Detectors and in addition to support the delivery of test solutions from early prototype development through to productionisation. This role presents an excellent opportunity for an ambitious individual to develop and grow their skills and knowledge within a thriving organisation. This role would suit a candidate with experience in Environmental Testing or someone looking to grow their skills in this area.

Main Purpose of the Job

  • To carry out various environmental tests such as thermal shock, humidity and temperature cycling amongst others.
  • May require travel to our other sites across the UK to use their facilities, or outside of Leonardo at external test houses.
  • Support the design, development and through-life support of electro-optical test equipment and test processes for the company’s range of Infrared Detectors, from initial product development through to volume production.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpretation of qualification and mechanical verification test plans in order to define a test strategy and plan.
  • Generate work packages and estimate the cost to deliver said plan, including identification and engagement with internal and external suppliers.
  • Deliver the work packages to time and budget.
  • Be proactive to progress parts through the different test stages.
  • Ensure all Environmental Tests are carried out to the required National and International standards as appropriate.
  • Accurately and impartially observe, record and report on test activities.
  • Maintain a safe working environment during all work activities and contribute to the identification of process improvement opportunities.
  • Develop bespoke solutions to provide the test requirements for the test plan.
  • Verify new test jigs, perform vibration analysis and resonance searches.
  • Programme chambers and shaker systems, verify new test profiles.
  • Identify, procure, install and commission new test capability when required.
  • Preparation of technical documentation including user instructions.

Key Skills and Experience required

  • Essential HNC/HND or higher or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline, e.g. Physics, Mechanical Engineering.
  • Ability to validate and qualify new electro-mechanical designs under different environmental conditions.
  • Ability to assimilate and apply technical information to design tasks and to problem solving.
  • Experience of use of environmental test equipment, e.g. shakers, shock testers, environmental chambers etc.
  • Demonstrate evidence of good organisation, planning and execution of work.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work closely in a team with other engineering and science disciplines.
  • Good Communication and customer liaison skills.
  • Careful Measurement and analytical skillset.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the requirements of UKAS and ISO17025.
  • Experience of one or more of the following areas: Electrical test, Electro-optics.
  • Practical ‘hands on’ laboratory test, diagnostic and measurement experience, including electro-optical instrumentation.
  • Experience of mechanical design.
  • Detailed understanding of vibration control systems and laser vibrometry.
