AtkinsRéalis are recruiting for a dynamic and motivated Assistant Geophysicist based in our Bristol office to help support our rapidly increasing workload in the UK. We need to grow our team to meet the growing demands from our clients, especially in the infrastructure sector (particularly rail, highways & water) and the energy sector, which includes carbon capture & storage, renewable energy (wind, current and hydropower), low carbon engineering and nuclear power.

Your Purpose

The successful applicant will be a Geophysicist with a good degree (undergraduate or integrated Masters) in a Geophysical subject. Having some commercial experience in the application of near-surface geophysics to onshore engineering and geotechnical projects is desirable. It is expected that the applicant will be aware of the requirements for Chartered Geologist status, and will be able to work toward chartership with a specialism in Near-Surface Geophysics at an appropriate time in their career.

As a consultancy, we specialise in advising our clients in the most appropriate geophysical approaches to overcome challenges in ground engineering projects. This role is a unique opportunity to work in an expanding near-surface geophysical capability with a diverse project portfolio within our Ground Engineering & Tunnelling team and beyond. We want a candidate with the flare, ability and collegiality to support the development and expansion of our geophysical capability, which is built on a reputation for technical excellence. The candidate will contribute to this by contributing to the technical delivery of our diverse project portfolio and development of our flexible and outward looking geophysics capability.

For the Assistant Geophysicist position the successful candidate will be expected to work on different projects under direction from more senior members of the team. We seek someone who is keen to develop their technical ability through project work, mentoring and formal training opportunities, and someone who will enjoy working as part of a group of specialists to deliver relevant and technically excellent geophysical consulting services to a broad range of clients.

What You Can Bring

  • A good degree (undergraduate or integrated Masters) in a Geophysical subject.
  • Understanding of the requirements of, and a willingness and ability to work towards, Chartered Geologist status with a specialism in Near-Surface Geophysics.
  • A working understanding of geophysics with a focus on near-surface techniques applied to the fields of geotechnics and/or engineering geology.
  • Exposure to geophysical field techniques and associated geophysical processing software (e.g., Res2DInv, Seisimager, SurfSeis, Geolitix etc. and/or open-source applications) and visualisation software (e.g., Oasis montaj, Leapfrog, Civils 3D, Paraview, etc).
  • Excellent communication skills and confidence to communicate findings with and inspire non-geophysicists.
  • Drive to produce high-quality deliverables (reports, maps, data visualisations) that form the cornerstone of our project deliverables.
  • Solid writing skills with the ability to self-check and produce technically excellent work.
  • A willingness to travel on fieldwork assignments, sometimes for extended periods of time, both within the UK and overseas.
  • A valid UK driving licence.
  • Experience with Python (or similar programming) for geoscientific purposes.
  • Experience of geophysical field techniques and associated processing and visualisation software used in a commercial environment.
