Advise on the charity’s communications and public engagement strategy, ensuring coherent messaging, strong brand presence, and alignment with the charity’s mission and values. Offer strategic input on major campaigns, including fundraising, advocacy, and awareness initiatives. Evaluate and advise on digital marketing efforts, including website, social media, and email marketing, to enhance engagement and reach. Provide insights on emerging trends, audience behaviour, and sector dynamics to inform proactive marketing strategies and risk mitigation. Offer scrutiny and feedback on the charity’s communications performance, using data and KPIs to inform strategy and continual improvement.
Provide high-level guidance on fundraising strategy across a diverse income portfolio (e.g., individual giving, philanthropy, corporate partnerships, grants, legacy). Provide high-level input into major awareness or fundraising campaigns and support the development of strategic stakeholder communications, including for donors, funders, partners, and the general public. Leverage personal and professional networks to identify and cultivate relationships with major donors, corporate sponsors, and philanthropic partners. Review the planning and execution of major fundraising campaigns, including capital campaigns, legacy giving, and high-value donor initiatives. Share relevant market intelligence, policy context, and fundraising trends from the wider third sector or related industries.
Qualifications
- Senior leadership experience in fundraising, philanthropy, or income generation—ideally within or adjacent to the UK charity sector.
- Senior leadership experience in marketing.
- Strategic understanding of donor behaviour, brand building, or supporter engagement.
- Experience at committee or board level (charity, public, or corporate sector).
- Familiarity with legal, ethical, and regulatory considerations in UK charity fundraising.
- Experience in setting and managing significant budgets and income targets.
- Demonstrated success in leading strategic marketing transformations or brand repositioning initiatives.
- Digital marketing experience including leveraging TikTok and Instagram to grow supporter base / drive donations.
- Good understanding of working with and leveraging relationships with influencers to grow supporter base / drive donations.
- Good understanding of lobbying and public affairs.
- Event marketing / experiential marketing experience.
Time commitment
While DEBRA’s Head Office is based in Bracknell, Berkshire, our membership is spread across the UK. To be truly representative of that membership we encourage applicants from anywhere in the UK and committee members can access meetings virtually. This is an unpaid volunteer role, but any reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed in line with the Charity’s expenses policy. Meetings of the Fundraising and Marketing committee currently take place four times a year, each lasting between 2.5-3 hours.
