Reporting to the Global Head of Software Engineering, the Head of Software Architecture is responsible for leading and overseeing a global team of architects both as direct reports or matrixed dotted lines. You will be responsible for architecture governance, best practices, and alignment to agreed and standard interfaces and technical specifications, ultimately ensuring the way we build the software components in high-quality marking and coding products align with the company’s strategic goals.
This role requires a strong, technical thought-leader with an understanding of software enterprise and component architecture best practice, people management skills, and the ability to foster a collaborative and innovative work environment.
A typical day will involve:
- Strategic Leadership: In collaboration with the Global Head of Software Engineering, drive the implementation of the software strategy, define and drive the DevOps strategy and be responsible for leading a group of architects.
- Architectural Governance: Responsible for the architecture governance across all software teams in Videojet, ensuring component re-use, reduction of redundancies and alignment of stacks to minimize stack and tool proliferation.
- Team & Talent Management: Lead, mentor, and manage the architecture and DevOps teams fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Innovation: Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends to innovate and maintain a competitive edge. Lead selected team members in brainstorming solution ideas and collaborate with cross-functional teams to build prototypes, proof of concepts and test ideas.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with the Global Head of Software Engineering, local Software Site leaders and local Heads of Engineering to understand project needs. Collaborate with product owners and business unit managers to define priorities of non-functional requirements, reduction of code redundancy and maintenance of code.
The essential role-holder experience includes:
- Technology architecture experience in different software stacks, development and debugging techniques.
- Experience in application architectural design of complex software and promoting technology enhancement with non-technical stakeholders.
- Proficiency in modern architectural frameworks, modelling tools, and design documentation.
- A thorough understanding of the software development life cycle, including leadership roles in application architecture definition and documentation.
- Proven record of successfully leading teams of software/DevOps engineers and/or architects with strong people skills, especially team building, diplomacy, mentoring, and advocacy skills.
- Practical understanding and use of source control systems and branching strategies.
- Practical knowledge of DEVOPS lifecycle and CI/CD tools, including complete code to deploy toolchain and best practices.
- Experience of driving architectural governance and alignment such as API rationalization, reduction of stacks and third-party library dependencies.
Role Location: UK (Remote), Germany (Remote), Spain (Remote). Travel: up to 20% - Monthly visits to Software Sites (US, UK, Germany, India, China) & quarterly team meetings with your peers.
