In this role as a Microbiology Senior Analyst, you will be supervising junior staff in the Microbiology team according to the Laboratory Management System. This includes providing advice and assistance to junior staff undertaking chemical analysis using Colorimetry, Spectrophotometry, Chromatography and Gravimetric analysis. Your scientific background and solid experience in analytical laboratory work will enable you to make day-to-day operational decisions related to the Microbiology team and deputize for the Microbiology Team Leader in their absence. You understand how to correctly use equipment and chemicals, documenting their usage and ordering new stock when needed. Communication and supervisory skills are crucial, as you will be responsible for conducting yearly appraisals, setting targets and monitoring performance of analysts and technicians within the Microbiology team. You will also organise their training and ensure that compliance and quality standards are met.

Main responsibilities:
- Making day to day operational decisions relating to the Microbiology Section and deputize for the Microbiology Team Leader when needed.
- Reporting on all Microbiology/personnel issues and demonstrate competence in Analytical processes.
- Contributing significantly to the continuous improvement of the Laboratory and assisting with the strategic development of Scientific Services.
- Carrying out quality audits of internal practices to ensure compliance to the management system.
- Conducting yearly appraisals and regular one-to-ones of relevant staff members, target setting and assessing work performance.
- Purchasing chemicals and materials for the Microbiology section and ensuring use of equipment and chemicals are documented to ensure proper stock control and method uptime.
- Assisting the commercial team with information regarding prioritization of sample workload through the Microbiology section.
You’ll need:
- Undergraduate degree in Microbiology or other relevant scientific discipline.
- At least 2 years’ experience in analytical laboratory work.
- Team management and supervisory skills.
- Effective communication, time management and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working in a water laboratory is desirable but not essential.
It will be a bonus if you have:
- Registered by a recognised institution.
- Skills in presenting would be desirable.
