I am recruiting for a Freelance Sub Agent with a track record of delivering large-scale civils/highways schemes for Tier 1 / Tier 2 Civil Engineering Contractors. The successful Freelance Sub Agent will join an existing site team on a £60m Highways Improvement Scheme.
THE ROLE:
- Play a key leadership role on a high-profile scheme, managing day-to-day construction activities, supervising teams, and ensuring site excellence across safety, quality, and programme management.
- Supporting programme development and driving weekly construction targets.
- Managing site setup and logistics from pre-start to handover.
- Overseeing subcontractor performance and resolving on-site issues.
- Championing HSEQ standards – ensuring compliance and continuous improvement.
- Leading toolbox talks, site briefings, and day-to-day coordination.
- Maintaining up-to-date Temporary Works Registers and all necessary permits.
- Monitoring site waste, energy usage, and sustainability KPIs.
- Coordinating with Commercial and Contracts teams on risks or constraints.
- Managing daily operations, sequencing activities, and leading site staff.
THE CANDIDATE
- 10+ years’ experience in highways/civils-based role (Tier 1 background desirable).
- Strong leadership with proven people and subcontractor management.
- Ability to juggle site demands, stakeholder expectations, and fast-paced delivery.
- Solid understanding of industrial relations, health & safety, and quality systems.
- Technical trade or engineering background, with up-to-date HSE qualifications.
- IOSH or equivalent.
- Temporary Works Coordinator/Supervisor.
