I am recruiting for a Freelance Sub Agent with a track record of delivering large-scale civils/highways schemes for Tier 1 / Tier 2 Civil Engineering Contractors. The successful Freelance Sub Agent will join an existing site team on a Β£60m Highways Improvement Scheme.

THE ROLE:

  • Play a key leadership role on a high-profile scheme, managing day-to-day construction activities, supervising teams, and ensuring site excellence across safety, quality, and programme management.
  • Supporting programme development and driving weekly construction targets.
  • Managing site setup and logistics from pre-start to handover.
  • Overseeing subcontractor performance and resolving on-site issues.
  • Championing HSEQ standards – ensuring compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Leading toolbox talks, site briefings, and day-to-day coordination.
  • Maintaining up-to-date Temporary Works Registers and all necessary permits.
  • Monitoring site waste, energy usage, and sustainability KPIs.
  • Coordinating with Commercial and Contracts teams on risks or constraints.
  • Managing daily operations, sequencing activities, and leading site staff.

THE CANDIDATE

  • 10+ years’ experience in highways/civils-based role (Tier 1 background desirable).
  • Strong leadership with proven people and subcontractor management.
  • Ability to juggle site demands, stakeholder expectations, and fast-paced delivery.
  • Solid understanding of industrial relations, health & safety, and quality systems.
  • Technical trade or engineering background, with up-to-date HSE qualifications.
  • IOSH or equivalent.
  • Temporary Works Coordinator/Supervisor.
