University: University of Liverpool Country: United Kingdom Deadline: Not specified The University of Liverpool, in collaboration with Rolls Royce Derby and the Fusion Engineering Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT), invites applications for a PhD project focused on enhancing the longevity and functionality of non-metallic materials through atmospheric plasma processing. Project Overview This research aims to improve the performance and lifespan of non-metallic components, such as O-rings used in reactor vessels, by developing advanced surface modification techniques. The project will utilize a state-of-the-art atmospheric pressure plasma rig to polymerize different chemistries and apply various enhancement coatings to non-metallic surfaces. Comprehensive analysis of the modified materials will be conducted using advanced diagnostic tools in both gas-phase and surface-phase chemistry. Key Responsibilities β Employ atmospheric pressure plasma technology to modify and coat non-metallic materials (e.g., PTFE, EPDM, nitriles). β Analyze materials using techniques such as Optical Emission Spectroscopy, FTIR, Scanning Electron Microscopy, TEM, XPS, FTIR-ATR, and hardness testing. β Assess the performance of plasma-processed materials under environmental stressors, particularly thermal degradation. β Participate in a 3-month training programme in fusion engineering at partner universities (Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield, and Liverpool). Eligibility Requirements β Background in materials science, chemical engineering, physics, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, or related fields. β Strong interest in experimental research and surface modification technologies.
