Description Of Work: This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits, competitive salaries, and many career development opportunities. Positions in this class perform semi-skilled small engine, automotive, and heavy equipment repair. This includes a wide range of tasks involving the service, inspection, repair, rebuild, and diagnosis of mechanical systems for various gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines/equipment. Work includes inspection and service to moderately complex mechanical systems analysis using diagnostic instruments and software. Positions must determine materials, techniques, and tools to accomplish work assignments. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system and components. Tasks include inspecting and replacing brake pads, replacing regulators, alternators, and belts, preventative maintenance, and more. Employees may perform mechanic work at various levels and may need to work during adverse weather conditions.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies: Qualified applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience demonstrating the following:

  • Experience in the repair and replacement of tires
  • Experience in performing preventive maintenance on light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the equipment shop such as wrenches, sockets, battery charger, hydraulic jacks, loader, forklift, automotive/truck lift, tire changer, and diagnostic equipment.

Additional Expectations: The selected candidate must legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained within 360 days of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required. As a condition of employment, a release form must be completed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is required.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements: High school or GED diploma or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements: May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
