The Medical Division at Mid Yorkshire Teaching Hospitals provides acute care across a range of medical specialties in a large, modern, purpose-built hospital in Wakefield. Facilities include a large Acute Assessment Unit, Acute Elderly Assessment Unit, Coronary Care, and an Acute (Respiratory) Care Unit. We also offer care for acute elderly admissions and step-down care at Dewsbury & District Hospital.

Successful applicants will support the Cardiology team in managing inpatient and outpatient workloads and participate in trust-wide out-of-hours general medicine cover across both hospital sites. Our Cardiology team comprises 15 consultants, 2 Specialty Doctors, 4 Specialty Registrars, 3 core trainees, and 3 Foundation trainees. We have support from specialist nurses based within the trust and in the community.

With 11 Coronary Care and 26 Cardiology beds, advanced diagnostic facilities, and access to non-invasive and invasive cardiac procedures, our team benefits from modern facilities, including TTE, TOE, CTCA, CMRI (including stress MR), and interventional radiology services.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide care with responsibility for managing patients with acute and chronic conditions, including complex cases.
  • Refer patients to other specialties as appropriate.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Teach and supervise junior medical staff and other clinicians.
  • Engage in audit and clinical governance activities, including service improvement.

Job responsibilities

An exciting opportunity exists for a Clinical Fellow in Cardiology at Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust on a 12-month fixed-term basis. This role includes participation in the cross-site senior trainee General Medicine Registrar on-call rota. Applicants will have equivalent educational opportunities as other trainees and protected SDT time. Note: These posts are not recognized UK training posts. However, post-holders will have a designated supervisor and support for scheduled educational activities within the Trust and specialties.

Introduction from Dr. Nigel Artis, Divisional Clinical Director

The Medical Division provides comprehensive acute care in Wakefield, including facilities for coronary and respiratory care, with a focus on patient-centered services integrated with primary care. Our team includes 15 consultants, 2 Specialty Doctors, 4 Specialty Registrars, and trainees, supported by specialist nurses.

Our facilities include 11 coronary care beds, 26 cardiology beds, advanced diagnostic tools, and a full range of cardiac procedures. We also operate a fully established bradycardia pacing, complex device, and PCI service (excluding PPCI), along with a nurse-led heart failure service with community links.

The Service Role

The post involves participation in the cross-site senior trainee rota, compliant with the 2016 junior doctor contract, with an illustrative rota attached. Duties are primarily based at Pinderfields Hospital, with involvement across all sites.

  • Manage patients with acute and chronic conditions, including complex cases.
  • Refer patients to other specialties as needed.
  • Engage in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Supervise junior staff and clinicians.
  • Participate in audit and governance activities.
  • Additional duties may be assigned based on operational needs.

Educational and Training Opportunities

This post aims to prepare candidates for national training program applications, with opportunities to develop specialist knowledge, lead quality improvement projects, and participate in teaching. Successful trainees have progressed onto national programs.

Each doctor will have an Educational Supervisor and develop a Personalised Work Schedule balancing clinical and educational activities, reviewed regularly. Completion of the program leads to a Certificate of Achievement, with assessments documented via WPBA tools and an annual progress review.

Terms, Conditions, and Pay

Employment is under Trust terms as a MYDoc Clinical Fellow for 12 months, with possible extensions up to 3 years based on performance and development needs. The salary starts at £61,825 per annum, aligned with specialty training pay scales.

Person Specification

  • Qualifications: MBBS or equivalent, with MRCP(UK) Part 1 and full diploma, or equivalent qualifications. Progress towards or attainment of relevant Royal College exams.
  • Personal Attributes: Good communication skills, English proficiency, flexibility and willingness to learn and contribute, physical ability to perform duties.
  • Experience: Evidence of achievement of foundation competencies and internal medicine capabilities. Experience in medical specialties and teaching.
  • Eligibility and Registration: Right to work in the UK. Full GMC registration or eligibility.
