A little more about your role… We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our London Transport Planning team as an Associate Director or Technical Director. The typical day-to-day responsibilities include the following:

  • Working with other senior leaders in the office and nationally to drive growth and expand our market share; with a particular focus on public sector clients in London.
  • Helping to drive innovation and identify market trends to add value to projects and bids, and position WSP to maximise our future opportunities in the Local Authority market.
  • Leading in the preparation of bids, fee proposals and project programmes.
  • Leading on developing and maintaining strong client relationships.
  • Lead and manage a broad range of transport projects, including strategy development, feasibility studies, research, concept design and funding bids.
  • Responsibility for project team management and collaboration, budgeting, programming and technical excellence.
  • Attending and presenting at internal and external technical knowledge sharing events to gain insight and promote WSP’s experience and expertise.
  • Making an active contribution to WSP’s four pillars (People; Clients & Growth; Operations; and Technical Excellence) and supporting the Leads in these roles.
  • Give direction to our early career professionals to maximise their technical potential.

We are looking for an individual who can bring original thinking, creative ideas, industry insight and knowledge of policy direction to add value to business development, tenders and projects. You will have experience of leading on a wide range of small to large scale transport planning commissions, as well as experience of managing project teams and the commercial aspects of bidding, winning and delivering successful schemes.

Your Team: Our London Transport Planning Team works on a diverse portfolio of multidisciplinary and cross-sector projects for a range of mainly public sector clients. Key project specialisms include transport strategy/policy, active travel planning and design, public transport planning, research, feasibility studies, training programmes and funding applications. While our primary focus is on the London market, we also provide support for projects across the UK, collaborating closely with our modelling, infrastructure design, landscape & urban design, planning and environmental teams. With a strong local and regional pipeline of work, the successful applicant will play a key role in delivering an exciting and challenging range of projects for clients who include London boroughs, Transport for London, Local Authorities, and National Government, many of whom we have framework agreements with. You will be supported by senior members of our London teams as well as our virtual UK-wide specialist teams, which include industry-leading experts. What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

  • A proven track record of leading and managing transport planning projects in the UK, focussing on London.
  • A proven track record of acting in client-facing roles and maintaining good client relationships.
  • Experience in delivering projects in some of the following areas of transport planning: strategy/ policy, active travel, public transport, feasibility studies, scheme development, concept design, funding bids.
  • The ability to work at both strategic and detailed levels is highly desirable, along with up-to-date knowledge on latest transport legislation and policy.
  • Experience of promoting business interests at external events.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills and excellent working knowledge of MS Office tools (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint), transport data analysis and presentation software.
  • Ability to produce technical project reports and accessible non-technical public reports and presentations for a range of clients and stakeholders to a high technical standard.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, able to communicate confidently with clients, stakeholders, team members and present at meetings, workshops and public forums.
  • Project management experience, with the ability to review client briefs and tenders, develop and contribute to fee proposals and lead project delivery including supervising workloads, task delegation, supporting junior staff and managing client expectations.
  • Have a sound commercial awareness including effective financial management.
  • Membership of relevant professional bodies.
