The Estimator will provide expert advice and guidance in the analysis and preparation of capital cost estimates for multi-million dollar petrochemical and oil & gas projects. This role involves developing multi-discipline conceptual and definitive estimates for heavy industrial, commercial, and residential capital projects, covering all cost aspects of engineering, materials/equipment, and construction. The Estimator will support project management and contracting teams with bid evaluations and participate in negotiations for lump sum, unit rate, reimbursable contracts, change orders, and amendments.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop consistent “building block” estimates for various project concepts by assessing scope and main components.
- Prepare detailed capital cost estimates considering project complexity, objectives, scope, and economic analysis.
- Translate project scope into capital expenditure estimates for design, procurement, and construction.
- Formulate and validate quantity derivation methodologies based on design parameters (especially during FEED).
- Develop capacity factored and location factor estimates.
- Determine appropriate contingency allowances based on project risks and variables.
- Prepare detailed Material Take-Offs (MTOs) with pricing and construction unit hours.
- Analyze drawings issued for construction (IFC) to prepare detailed cost estimates.
- Identify uncertainties and include appropriate allowances in estimates.
- Manage and benchmark estimating data, normalizing for future use and performance metrics.
- Prepare and review Change Order estimates, bids, and proposals from engineering and construction contractors.
- Serve as cost consultant and advisor to internal teams and external stakeholders (clients, vendors).
- Maintain current knowledge of cost estimating practices, standards, and industry developments.
- Review and ensure accuracy and completeness of contractor-prepared estimates.
- Assist with bid analysis and contract negotiations.
- Maintain and update estimating systems and tools to incorporate the latest methodologies and standards.
- Ensure confidentiality of all estimating information and data.
Requirements
- Educational & Technical: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering discipline.
- 10–15 years of estimating experience, including a minimum of 5 years in petrochemical, refinery, pipeline, or power generation projects.
- Familiarity with construction practices, materials, and equipment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; knowledge of K Base estimating software preferred.
- Experience setting up estimates, codes of accounts, and reporting processes.
- Ability to work collaboratively with project teams, external vendors, contractors, and stakeholders.
- International experience and ability to work with multicultural teams preferred.
- Strong command of written and verbal English.
