A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and experienced Senior Estates Manager to join the team and play a pivotal role in supporting the Director of Estates and driving the future success of the Trust\’s Estates objectives in a safe, cost-effective, and compliant manner.

The post holder will have operational management experience, preferably in Healthcare, and will oversee complex technical systems and processes across the Trust, ensuring compliance with standards, procedures, and legislation.

Main duties of the job

The Senior Estates Manager will report directly to the SCL Director of Estates and will:

  • Have lead operational responsibility for building, engineering, and maintenance services.
  • Provide effective management and leadership for staff in delivering operational Estates maintenance, Capital and Additional Works, and Estates Backlog.
  • Lead planning, programming, and monitoring of Estates Backlog, with reporting on delivery against programme and budget.
  • Undertake contractual performance reviews, audits, and prepare assurance reports.
  • Support management of Clinical Engineering services, ensuring proper procurement, maintenance, and replacement of medical devices and equipment.
  • Oversee capital construction and refurbishment projects.
  • Support the property team in space utilization projects and maintenance contracts.

CDD Services / SCL is a wholly owned subsidiary of County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT), set up to deliver non-clinical services. It is a separate legal entity from CDDFT.

CDD Services offers its own Terms and Conditions of employment, which differ from NHS standards. Benefits include:

  • Access to a pension scheme – National Employment Savings Trust (NEST), with a 3% contribution from CDD Services (above the minimum).

Bank work is offered on an \’as and when\’ basis, paid pro-rata for hours worked.

Job responsibilities

Main duties include:

  • Leading and managing staff in programming and delivering operational Estates maintenance and backlog services.
  • Formulating long-term strategic plans for building and engineering services.
  • Monitoring performance of service providers and ensuring continuous improvement.
  • Managing Clinical Engineering services, including procurement and maintenance of medical devices.
  • Providing project management support for capital schemes.
  • Supporting the property management team in various projects.
  • Coordinating audits, reviews, and stakeholder communication.
  • Managing Estates-related defects, safeguards, and ensuring compliance with safety and statutory requirements.
  • Leading estates-related sustainability initiatives, including energy and waste management.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Managing multidisciplinary teams and external contractors.
  • Senior management experience in NHS Estates or relevant sectors.
  • Experience with technical risk assessments and capital project management.
  • Budget management and financial planning skills.
  • Strong report writing, presentation, and Microsoft Office skills.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Strategic, managerial, and technical expertise.
  • Knowledge of statutory compliance, procurement, and CDM regulations.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and influencing skills.
  • Budgeting and project delivery skills.

Requirements

  • Eligible to work in the UK.

Qualifications

  • Degree in engineering or construction, with postgraduate specialization.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body.
  • Continuous professional development evidence.
  • Full driving license and Chartered Engineer status.

Salary: £60,084 to £71,794 per year, depending on experience.
