About us

Our purpose is simple, to save lives at sea and on inland waters. Our volunteer lifeboat crews launch to save those who are in danger of drowning at any hour of the day or night, and our beach lifeguards work to prevent drowning on our coast during the busy Easter season and summer months. However, the RNLI is also working on saving lives through providing water safety education to those who visit and enjoy the water for recreation or sport.

We’re looking for a Water Safety Education Manager to join our Water Safety Team in the South East. As part of the water safety team, you will ensure water safety education and messaging is fit for purpose and aligned with the RNLI’s drowning reduction plan and identified risk. You would live in or near the RNLI South East region.

Your role

As Water Safety Education Manager, your responsibilities in this role will include:

  • Provide guidance and influence to develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate targeted education activity aimed at adults and younger audiences aligned with the RNLI’s Drowning Reduction Plan, underpinned by appropriate evidence and evaluation.
  • Inform the Water Safety Lead of potentially significant risks to life and plan an education strategy to mitigate them. Support with community and national partnership development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Act as a member of the RNLI’s central Water Safety Team to create, design and develop the overall Water Safety education strategy, providing feedback and recommendations.
  • Set and manage relevant areas of the Water Safety education budget.
  • Develop and deliver targeted, lifelong learning, community-based programmes to reduce the risk of drowning and increase awareness of water safety.

About you

As a key member of the water safety team, you will be responsible for the effective management of water safety and preventative education. You will ensure a joined-up approach to water safety education with direct measurable links to drowning reduction plans. You will also manage and support RNLI volunteers, work with our partners around the region, and help guide a collaborative approach to water safety education at a local community and national level.

You will contribute to the leadership and strategic direction of the Regional Water Safety team, understanding changing trends in water usage and risk and representing the team internally and externally.

You will help to broaden the reach of water safety education to new audiences by working with the government and public sector on policy and curriculum delivery and finding innovative ways to succeed in our region's urban centres where the RNLI has limited cut through.

To be considered as the Water Safety Education Manager, you will need:

  • Degree educated or equivalent.
  • Demonstrable experience in both Project Management and Risk Management.
  • Experience of working in the education sector with a track record of working in the community.
  • Experience of working with volunteers and proven ability to influence others.
  • Full driving licence and a willingness to travel.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good IT skills; PC literate, happy using Microsoft tools, happy using systems and applications.
  • Previous management and/or supervisory experience, preferably with volunteers (desirable).
