We are seeking a skilled and detail-driven Sea and Road Freight Operator with solid experience in customs processes and compliance. This role is key in managing the end-to-end movement of cargo via sea and road, while ensuring that all shipments meet regulatory and customs requirements. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience in freight coordination, strong knowledge of import/export regulations, and the ability to maintain accurate documentation throughout the shipping cycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate sea and road freight shipments, including booking, loading, documentation, and final delivery.
- Manage daily communication with carriers, hauliers, freight forwarders, and customers to ensure on-time performance.
- Track and monitor shipment progress, proactively resolving delays or issues.
- Prepare and submit customs declarations and supporting documentation for both import and export shipments.
- Ensure compliance with HMRC regulations, international trade laws, and commodity classifications (HS Codes).
- Liaise with customs brokers, border agents, and government bodies to facilitate smooth customs clearance.
- Manage and verify commodity codes, duty/tax calculations, and ensure proper handling of controlled or restricted goods.
- Maintain accurate and organised records for all customs entries and audit purposes.
- Keep up to date with changes in customs regulations and ensure processes align with current legislation.
- Generate and manage shipping documents: Commercial Invoices, Packing Lists, Bills of Lading, Certificates of Origin, etc.
- Input and manage shipment data in internal systems, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
Requirements
- Experience in freight forwarding or logistics, with specific exposure to customs procedures.
- Strong knowledge of sea and road freight operations, Incoterms, and international trade requirements.
- Experience using customs declaration systems (e.g., CHIEF, CDS, or similar).
- Familiarity with import/export documentation and tariff classification.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and reporting.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple shipments, and meet tight deadlines.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
