Maths Tutor
Job Description
The Maths Tutor provides tailored, individual or small group tuition in mathematics to learners of varying ages and abilities. The tutor plans and delivers engaging lessons that address specific learning needs, enabling students to improve their mathematical skills and confidence. The role involves assessing student progress, providing constructive feedback and adapting teaching methods to suit different learning styles. The Maths Tutor works in accordance with the curriculum requirements and supports learners in preparation for examinations and other assessments.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare and deliver effective maths tuition sessions that meet individual student needs.
- Assess students’ current abilities and identify areas for improvement.
- Use a variety of teaching techniques and resources to engage learners and enhance understanding.
- Provide regular feedback to students on their progress and offer guidance on how to improve.
- Support students in preparation for examinations, including GCSEs, A-levels or equivalent qualifications.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress and lesson plans.
- Adapt lesson content and approaches to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
- Maintain professional boundaries and create a positive learning environment.
- Stay up to date with changes in the mathematics curriculum and relevant examination board requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Strong proficiency in mathematics, equivalent to at least A-level standard or higher.
- Qualifications in education, tutoring, or a related discipline are desirable.
Education
- Minimum of GCSE or equivalent in Mathematics at grade 6 (B) or above.
- A-levels or equivalent qualifications in Mathematics or related subjects.
Experience
- Proven experience delivering one-to-one or small group tuition in mathematics.
- Experience working with learners across a range of ages and abilities is advantageous.
- Familiarity with the GCSE and A-level curricula and examinations is preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
- Excellent subject knowledge in mathematics.
- Strong communication skills, able to explain complex concepts clearly and patiently.
- Ability to motivate and encourage learners to achieve their potential.
- Good organisational skills and ability to manage time effectively.
- Competent in using a range of teaching resources, including digital tools and materials.
- Ability to assess learners’ needs and tailor lessons accordingly.
- Professional and approachable manner with a commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of learners.
Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching qualification or recognised tutoring accreditation.
- Experience with exam preparation and revision techniques.
- Familiarity with educational technology platforms and online tutoring methods.
- First aid qualification or willingness to undertake one.
Working Conditions
- The role involves working flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate student availability.
- Tutoring sessions may take place at a variety of locations including students’ homes, educational centres or online.
- Part-time hours with the possibility of variable scheduling depending on demand.
- Requires occasional travel within Greater London.
- The role demands patience, adaptability and the ability to work independently.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
