Front-End Designer / Developer for Visual Storytelling Front-End Designer / Developer for Visual Storytelling 1 month ago Be among the first 25 applicants We are looking for a creative and technically skilled Front-End Designer / Developer to join our newsroom and collaborate on ambitious investigative, data-driven, and multimedia storytelling projects. Youâll be part of a cross-disciplinary team working to expose truths, explain complexity, and hold power to account – crafting innovative digital experiences that amplify the impact of our journalism whilst elevating and pushing our technical capabilities This role is ideal for someone who can think like a designer, code like a developer, and tell stories like a journalist. Youâll partner with reporters, data analysts, other developers and the design team to translate deep investigative work into dynamic, accessible, and compelling digital narratives. From scrollytelling features to data-driven visual narratives, youâll help shape how readers experience our stories onlineâdesigning and building bespoke editorial projects that elevate reporting through design, code, and thoughtful user experience. Responsibilities Build and design custom editorial features and interactive articles that enhance reporting and engage readers. Collaborate closely with journalists, editors, designers and developers to translate reporting into compelling digital experiences. Develop the use of AI2HTML to create web-based animated graphics Integrate animation, data visualisation, and multimedia elements into editorial layouts. Rapidly prototype and iterate on designs based on editorial goals and real-time feedback. Optimize interactive features for performance, accessibility, and editorial deadlines. Contribute to newsroom discussions about innovative ways to present complex information visually. Qualifications Experience in front-end development, visual journalism, or editorial/interaction design. Familiarity with animation or storytelling libraries (e.g. Shorthand, GSAP, Lottie, Scrollama). A keen eye for design, layout, and visual hierarchy, especially in a journalistic context. Experience working in a newsroom or on editorial products is highly valued. Understanding of accessibility standards and performance optimization in web development. Proficiency with design tools such as Figma, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git) and collaborative workflows. Keeping on top of latest trends in both design and front-end development Are passionate about journalism and believe in the power of visual storytelling to inform, explain, and engage. Thrive at the intersection of design, development, and editorial thinking. Follow best practices in visual journalism and enjoy experimenting with new digital formats.
