Job overview:

Work to create our new, world-leading Children’s Cancer Centre is underway and we are looking for an expert leader and facilitator to play a key role in delivering this amazing new facility. Connecting into the existing estate, the Children’s Cancer Centre will be a unique resource for children with some of the most complex cancers. Alongside providing a new home for cancer services, we are creating a new main entrance for the entire hospital, extending existing critical care, theatres and imaging floors into the new facility, and developing a new school, benefiting all children at GOSH. We are now in RIBA design stage 5 with our main contractor onboard.

Main duties of the job:

  • The postholder will have six principal areas of responsibility which include:
  • Governance
  • Risk
  • Programme Management Office (PMO)
  • Design & Design Engagement
  • Deputising for the Delivery Director

We are looking for an expert leader facilitator, who will play a key role in identifying risks and issues. The role will operate as a highly skilled negotiator and ‘unblocker’ to drive progress towards delivery within the time, cost and quality parameters of the Programme. The post holder will actively maintain a detailed overview of the CCC programme and through the leadership of the Programme Management Office will coordinate the programme’s workstreams, managing their interdependencies. The role is crucial for creating and maintaining focus, enthusiasm and momentum. The post holder will also deputise for and, as appropriate and required, take decisions on behalf of the Director in the areas of responsibility set out in this job description. They will have line management of designated members of the CCC team as required. They will also be required to manage external consultants and senior Project Managers in the delivery of design and construction. The post is an essential part of the Children’s Cancer Centre Team, who work closely with all clinical and corporate teams within the Trust.

This role is a band 9, 24-month fixed term post, full-time 37.5 hours per week in accordance with the standard AfC terms and conditions.

Person specification:

Experience/knowledge:

  • Significant experience of implementing long term strategy in a large complex organisation.

  • Experience of developing and managing ‘formal’ programmes of work (preferably on an intraorganisational basis) using structured programme and /or project management methodology, e.g. MSP, PRINCE/2.
  • Extensive experience of risk management (i.e. assessment, management, mitigation) in a formal context, e.g. at an organisational or programme level.
  • Experience of managing or leading the successful delivery of programmes or projects in a multi-disciplinary and complex environment, ideally in the NHS and construction.
  • Experience of working with senior managers/leaders in complex organisations and able to influence at this level effectively.
  • Experience of overseeing benefits realisation.
  • Evidence of autonomous decision-making with appropriate reference for advice and authority (e.g. from expert sources) in and outside the organisation.
  • Experience of working in a hospital at senior clinical and/or managerial level.
  • Experience as a Gateway Reviewer of medium or high risk programmes or projects.
  • Previous personal responsibility for the implementation of Major Capital Schemes.
