We\’re seeking a Systems Engineer to be primarily responsible for the train running gear. Each systems engineer is allocated responsibility for one or several train systems and acts as the EIL technical authority for that system. The system engineer is responsible for the safe and reliable performance of their specific train system. The System Engineer works within the Rolling Stock department, in the Engineering team. They work with many other people and departments across a wide variety of technical issues and are a key link to Production, Materials, Fleet, Quality and Safety. The close date for this role is Friday 7th February 2025. We\’re looking for someone to… Acting as the EIL technical authority for their relevant system(s), be responsible for the safe and reliable operation of said system(s) Working with the performance team and production teams, ensure that all system issues are monitored, prioritised and actioned upon, as necessary Analyse defects to root cause level. Use failure finding techniques such as Ishikawa, β€˜5 Why\’s\’ and Failure modelling tools (e.g. FMECA, RCM, etc) Continuously improve the maintenance regime (tasks and periodicities) in response to lessons learnt, reliability performance and safety Support the production teams with technical support on relevant system issues, as required Use experience and knowledge of rolling stock and the organisation to facilitate requests for information/help from relevant departments Attend relevant meetings such as the Technical Planning Meeting, Reliability Meetings, etc. as required Escalate issues to line manager as required Produce and scrutinise engineering change packs with respect to his/her responsible system(s). Act as a signatory (Competent Person) for all engineering changes to which competence can be demonstrated. Within the running gear system, these are almost always of a safety critical nature Raise, investigate, manage and/or close out any relevant system issues including, but not limited to, SANs, PANs, SRDs, PIRs, Non-conformances, SDRs, NIRs, RIPs, MIPs, DIPs, etc Investigate and evaluate opportunities within his/her system responsibility to drive down costs, improve productivity, increase safety, improve availability, etc. Develop business cases as necessary Build strong working relationships within EIL across all departments and with key suppliers (e.g Siemens, SNCF, SNCB, Masteris, etc) Make use of EIL systems to drive a data driven approach to issues (Equinox, Power BI, system diagnostic software, etc) Analysis of system data sets to identify trends, failure modes and other performance issues Requirements You\’ll need to have… Have an in-depth knowledge of running gear on modern rolling stock, including from a train maintenance point of view Have an appropriate qualification in an engineering discipline (e.g HNC/D, Degree) Have knowledge of industry standards (TSIs, NTSNs, NTRs, CSM, etc) Be able to demonstrate relevant experience in an operational engineering environment, and specific to train running gear Be able to demonstrate that they understand the challenges that the role encompasses and work autonomously on projects Be a team player, recognising the overall needs of the business during challenging operating conditions Be an effective communicator, able to explain technical problems with suppliers, peers and non-technical operational staff Be a β€˜systems thinker\’, fully aware of the interaction between their system and other train/groundside systems Be capable of reading engineering schematics and drawings Be capable of building and evaluating simple business cases to support proposed modifications Be fully conversant with risk assessments and how to produce them Familiar will key Microsoft Office tools.
