The Clinical Nurse Specialist will work alongside the Cardiac ICU and Advanced Heart Failure unit managers to lead quality initiatives, develop and implement evidence-based improvement projects, and support direct care nurses with education and just-in-time training. The CNS also provides direct patient consulting through various avenues on the unit, including interdisciplinary rounds, direct care nurse support, and specialty patient education and care. The role requires expertise in patient specialties such as Critical Care, Left Ventricular Assist Devices, Heart Transplantation, and Pulmonary Hypertension.
Cardiac ICU (CICU): 10 beds on the 2nd floor. Patient population includes cardiac non-surgical cases, pulmonary hypertension, heart attack, heart failure, sepsis, shock, and other ICU-level needs. CICU nurses are part of the Medical Response Team.
Advanced Heart Failure Unit: 24-bed specialty unit providing high acuity cardiac care for severe heart failure, pre/post heart transplant, Total Artificial Heart, and pulmonary hypertension patients. Work involves high-tech equipment such as mechanical circulatory support devices (LVAD, BiVAD) and telemetry monitors. The environment relies on 24-hour consistent communication and teamwork. Nurses typically handle 3-4 patients based on acuity. The unit is an ACCN Gold Beacon Award recipient, recognized for excellence in patient care and fostering teamwork and positivity.
Education: Masters of Nursing (MSN)
Certification/Licensure: Virginia RN License or Multi-State Eligible. All direct care RNs must have BLS within 90 days of hire. Critical Care/IMCU ACLS within 1 year of hire.
Experience: Minimum 2 years of RN experience required.
