The Mechanical Engineering Department supports the design, construction, and testing of fluid systems and equipment on naval surface combatants. Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide technical and project leadership for assigned systems, equipment and related tasks.
  • Develop and maintain equipment specifications, diagrams and associated calculations.
  • Support construction activities, including ship testing, system activation and sea trials.
  • Interface with customers to resolve technical issues, recommend changes and maintain appropriate communications.
  • Develop, document, and present technical positions on requirements compliance issues related to design and construction within assigned areas of cognizance.
  • Create CAE models that simulate ship system designs, and perform analyses and calculations using CAE applications.
  • Participate on, or lead, integrated product and process teams.
  • Develop and define ship system engineering requirements and relate them to top-level performance requirements.

Required/Preferred Education/Training

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or Marine Engineering from an ABET accredited university or college required.
  • MS degree and/or PE license preferred.
  • WINDOWS and WINDOWS software operating skills required; CAD (CATIA or AutoCAD) skills desirable.

Required/Preferred Experience

  • Engineer I: No minimum experience
  • Engineer II: Minimum 1 year experience in Mechanical, Marine, or applicable engineering/technical position
  • Engineer III: Minimum 3 years experience in Mechanical, Marine, or applicable engineering/technical position
  • Senior Engineer: Minimum 5 years experience in Mechanical, Marine, or applicable engineering/technical position

Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of fluid mechanics in the design and development of piping and auxiliary systems. Knowledge of fluid system equipment, pump curves, pressure drop, heat transfer, and piping system design. Knowledge of testing and activation of fluid systems. System modeling experience preferred. Knowledge of firefighting systems, air conditioning plants, cooling water systems, and hydraulic systems preferred. Ability to use Microsoft Access database and VBA preferred. Excellent written and oral communication skills; adept at giving technical presentations at group meetings. Positive attitude toward a teaming environment and demonstrated ability to function as a contributing engineering team member. Ability to plan, organize, and execute projects. Ability to handle multiple projects and assignments. Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects. Must be able to obtain a security clearance. This position requires you to be able to obtain a government security clearance. You must be a US Citizen for consideration and you must be able to obtain an interim security clearance within the first 45 days of hire.
