Nurse Practitioner (MA) at Recovery Centers of America

Position overview: Working under the supervision of the Medical Director and physician designees, the Nurse Practitioner provides care for patients with substance use disorders who are 18 years and older, including pregnant women. This care includes the initial history and physical, assessment of acute medical and psychiatric concerns, interim management of chronic illnesses for the duration of the patient’s treatment at the RCA facility, and after-hours on-call coverage for admissions and other patient care concerns. NPs follow established nursing standards, procedures, and practices and may provide written and verbal orders to nursing staff for labs, medications, and other treatments deemed necessary. The NP may work in an inpatient or outpatient setting and will perform independently and as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Performs the following: Initial History and Physical Examination; intermittent medical assessments as warranted.
  • Recommends and/or orders medical interventions such as laboratory work, diagnostic imaging studies (X‑rays, CT, MRI, etc.), medications, and detoxification protocols (as allowed by state and federal regulations).
  • Documents appropriately in the medical record. May directly enter or utilize dictation to complete required documentation in a timely manner (admission assessment, history and physicals, intermittent assessments and recommendations).
  • Assesses the physiological, behavioral, and psychosocial health status of patients and communicates relevant information to the interdisciplinary treatment team in a timely manner.
  • May assist in the development of treatment plans and provides care consistent with these plans.
  • Reviews outpatient health history and information and makes appropriate clinical recommendations.
  • Interacts with patients, counseling staff, clinical dietitian, psychiatrist, medical director, other NPs, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team to promote a high standard of care.
  • Participates in delivering individualized patient care following best practices and approved policies.
  • Functions under the direct supervision of the Medical Director and physician designees in accordance with Nursing Standards of Care, Standards of Practice for Registered Professional Nurse as directed by the State Board of Nursing, RCA policies and procedures.
  • Assesses mobility for fall prevention and conditions that increase risk for compromised skin integrity.
  • Assesses and manages abnormal labs and diagnostic studies.
  • Triages symptoms that may require psychiatric care and refers cases to the psychiatric treatment team as needed.
  • Collaborates with the treatment team to determine appropriate treatment/discharge plans.
  • Establishes effective working relationships that foster organizational success.
  • Presents a positive, professional image to internal and external stakeholders in support of RCA’s mission.

Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing; current state license.
  • Master’s level or above required to provide an NPI number.
  • State Registered Nurse Practitioner required.
  • CAQH account number required (attested every quarter or 120 days).
  • 5–7 years nursing experience; five years’ experience in substance use disorders preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical health care diagnoses and terminology, detoxification procedures, diseases of addiction and substance use disorders, co-occurring disorders, DSM criteria and terminology.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong listening and collaboration abilities.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
