Project Accountant

1 day a week in office – South Cambridge

Do you have a flair for financial project oversight? Want to be the numbers person who ensures our strategic investments deliver real value? This role will put you at the heart of our transformation initiatives, using your accountancy expertise to track, analyse, and report on project expenditure across our organization. We are an ambitious financial services organization, unlike any other.

The Role

This position places you as the financial guardian of our project portfolio, working across the organization to ensure investment delivers value. Reporting to the Strategic Business Partner, you\’ll be embedded within our change function while maintaining strong links to the Commercial Finance team. You\’re joining at an exciting time as we roll out significant transformation initiatives that will shape our future direction.

Key Responsibilities

• Become an integral part of the change function, tracking investment from initial proposals through implementation
• Monitor financial performance against plans and alert stakeholders to emerging cost trends
• Evaluate and classify spending according to accounting standards for fixed and intangible asset recognition
• Create and update comprehensive ledgers for all categories of project expenditure
• Set up proper depreciation schedules and ensure accurate financial system entries for capital items
• Quantify and report on return-on-investment metrics to leadership teams
• Review technical development activities for potential tax incentives and liaise with specialist advisors
• Perform ongoing value assessments of in-progress initiatives
• Develop and present financial updates for the project governance committee
• Prepare documentation supporting project status and capital works-in-progress for external auditors
• Contribute to annual financial planning and long-range forecasting aligned with strategic goals
• Create clear, actionable financial insights for executive decision-makers
• Assist the Strategic Business Partner with specialized financial analyses

What You\’ll Bring

• Accounting qualification or equivalent experience
• Proven track record in project financial management
• Sharp analytical skills with a keen eye for detail
• Advanced Excel capabilities and data interpretation expertise
• Clear, concise communication – both written and verbal
• Ability to explain complex financial concepts to non-finance colleagues
• Strong time management and organizational skills
• Proactive, self-starter mentality
• Experience working alongside project teams and understanding delivery methodologies

As Project Accountant, you\’ll be instrumental in ensuring our strategic investments deliver maximum value. Your financial oversight will directly impact our transformation journey, providing the insights needed for informed decision-making about our resource allocation and project prioritization.
