The Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting and enhancing Istituto Marangoni’s safety culture. This role ensures compliance with UK health & safety legislation and promotes best practices across university facilities, departments, and campus-wide operations. The role will involve conducting risk assessments, implementing safety initiatives, and providing expert advice to ensure a safe and compliant environment for staff, students, and visitors.
Key responsibilities of the role:
- Ensure compliance with health & safety regulations (e.g. Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, Fire Safety Order 2005, and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002).
- Develop, implement, and review H&S policies, procedures, and programs.
- Assist in conducting risk assessments and safety audits across departments, including laboratories, workshops, and public areas.
- Support in the development and delivery of H&S training programs for faculty, staff, and students.
- Conduct safety induction and orientation for new employees and academics.
- Promote a strong safety culture through awareness campaigns and engagement initiatives.
- Support in investigating accidents, near-misses, and hazards, identifying root causes and corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate records of incidents and report findings.
- Support emergency preparedness and response planning.
- Work closely with academic departments, facilities management, and relevant departments to ensure safe operations.
- Serve as a point of contact for safety-related concerns and regulatory inspections.
- Participate in H&S meetings and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist and conduct fire drills, ensure maintenance of fire safety equipment on site.
- Support the Facilities Manager in leading the H&S Committee and conducting regular H&S meetings on site.
- Support facilities team in day-to-day operation and general management.
Education and skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience in health & safety, preferably in a higher education or research environment.
- Knowledge of UK health & safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, COSHH Regulations 2002, RIDDOR 2013, PUWER 1998, and the Fire Safety Order 2005 and other relevant H&S regulations.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to conduct training sessions and engage diverse audiences.
- Experience in managing health and safety risks related to campus facilities, including building maintenance, and hazardous materials handling.
- Familiarity with indoor air quality, asbestos management, and fire safety protocols.
- Excellent knowledge of English language. Italian language is a plus.
- Good knowledge of the Office Package.
- Ability to prioritise own workload and co-ordinate tasks to meet deadlines.
- Flexible and proactive approach to undertake new tasks.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to both be a team player and work independently.
- Interest in education, fashion and design.
